Owner description: Welcome to Kimono Tea Ceremony Maikoya, a 6-floor building that used to be a geisha house (okiya) until the mid 1980s. Osaka is the birthplace of tea ceremony and we have the best selection of kimonos in addition to antique calligraphy tools and historical artifacts on the display. We offer unique experiences where visitors can engage in Japanese pastimes. Daily workshops provide a fun introduction to the culture such as the traditional tea ceremony, kimono wearing, sushi experience, Japanese calligraphy, furoshiki, origami, and much more. All of these classes are taught by professionals in their field and all at one convenient location of Maikoya Osaka. Each workshop is in English and the masters are waiting to show you the meaning, symbolism and subtle aesthetics involved in every aspect of Japanese culture. Once you step into Maikoya, you travel back in time and perform cultural activities in exactly the same way the locals performed 400 years ago in an exactly the same ambiance.

Tried twice to book this tea ceremony - instead of the date I booked got the next day when we were no longer in Osaka.

Called the support number with no help provided.

Paid for two people to go to this twice

My daughter booked this beautiful experience as a surprise for me. The tea house is located in a very old geisha street. It was quite easy to find and we walked from our hotel. We were greeted and waited a short time to be respectfully dressed in beautiful kimono which we could choose from the collection. The tea ceremony was in a traditional room with a Maiko performing the ceremony and tea master assisting. English was spoken and the tea ceremony explained and presented to us. Photos were encouraged in various areas of the tea house. The visit lasted approximately 1 hour and needs to be pre booked.

This was a fantastic experience, we learnt about the history of tea ceremonies and were able to perform it ourselves and taste a Japanese sweet.
Highlight of the experience was getting dressed in a traditional kimono.
The ladies were so kind and accommodating.
I would definitely recommend. Plenty of time to take photos!
