The hotel is a 5 minute walk from the nearby tube station. By day the area looks busy and not very friendly. On arriving at the hotel from the outside it wasn't promising but as soon as you get inside it is an oasis of calm. We were greeted with a smile and asked to sit down. Within seconds a welcome drink arrived. We checked in easily and were able to leave our baggage safely while we went to have a look at the Osaka castle as we were early. On our return we were taken up to our room. Wow! Exactly what you'd expect in a traditional japanese home if you've watched Shogun. We had to take our shoes off at the door and put on the slippers that were provided. The room was a large room with a low table and chairs. Cupboards were discreet. The bathroom was more Western. We settled for a while before going downstairs to use the communal bath and laterfor a kobi beef meal that I'd booked as part of the package. This was fantastic but there was a huge amount of food. Huge. Being typically British we tried to eat everything at first but gradually ran out of space. When we returned to the room the mats were out and we slept on the floor. It was absolutely delicious. In the morning we had a japanese sushi breakfast which came as part of the package too. Also delicious - particularly if you like fish.

First off you can't beat the location! Right across the street from dotonbori! 40 min walk to Osaka castle. 5mins from the train station. Perfect.
The staff couldn't speak much English but they were very polite and communicated well with a room confusion before we arrived.

The fact that you have your own private onsen for hotel stays was amazing! Me and my partner have big tattoos and were worried we wouldn't be able to enjoy the onsen experience but we did! And I find myself reminiscing a lot about the comforting onsen there and convenience of it being in the basement of the hotel. Also the rooms were so beautiful with the ryokan style. We even had two women come and sort out our futon every night/morning and help with our yukata.

We didn't have food there as I'm a vegetarian and it was all meat dishes but the dining area looked spectacular. And with dotonbori being down the street we had so many choices for food anyway.

I could not recommend this place enough for a stay in Osaka. In fact next time we go I'm staying there again!

The street outside is a bit loud at night but what do you expect when you're so close to the vibrant night life of the amazing Osaka!

I chose Yamatoya Honten because I wanted to experience a traditional japanese guesthouse (ryokan) instead of staying in ordinary hotel and I was happy I made that decision because we (family with 3 children) had such a great experience here. The staff spoke english and very helpful. The room was very clean and I felt comfortable sleeping on futon mattress and tatami mat, not a problem at all even though this was a first time experience. The other highlight was the public bath (onsen), loved it and never had days without it. Lastly, the location was excellent as it was very near to Dotonbori street.

I don't usually give hotels a bad review so it's unfortunate that I have to in this case. This hotel is ideally located next to the Dontonburi area. Frankly it's a perfect location for tourists. However, the first room we were given was a disgrace. Around 1/3 of the floor tiles in the bathroom were missing, walls and doors badly scratched and the furniture looked like it had been salvaged. After complaining we were moved to another room which was in better condition still with stains on the walls and dinged up furniture but the bathroom floor was at least intact albeit directly transported from 1970, however it was on the third floor facing the busy road with single glazing. I am not a light sleeper but was woken up several times on both nights by street noise. No kettle or iron in the rooms. The staff were very helpful with good enough English but it really feels like the management here are cutting corners to save costs. We stayed in a traditional Japanese room, perhaps the western rooms are better. First hotel in Japan I've regretted staying in.

We booked this ryokan, the second on our trip so we knew what to expect. We loved the traditional Japanese room, from afar it looked nice. But upon closer inspection, there were dirty marks on the walls, the duvets smelled of smoke (despite it being a non-smoking room), the bath had multiple hairs in it (not mine or my partners). It just felt that this room hadn't been cleaned properly. The location of this hotel whilst convenient along the canal, also had its downside. The windows and paper shutters were thin, so we were kept awake from noise outside. We were on the third floor and I could even hear people stood downstairs talking. It was an incredibly uncomfortable night and I cannot believe how expensive it was. I would not recommend this hotel, I regretted it and you may do too.
