“Indigo House Gion (Upper Level) Hidden Gem”

This is a review for the Upper Level of Indigo House - we loved it! We were a group of two families traveling in Japan (4 adults and 4 children); we stayed in the upper level and our friends stayed in the lower level (which is as nice as the previous reviewers have stated). The upper level has a main bedroom in the back and a tatami room in the front where a futon was laid out and the kids stayed in. Indigo House is an old Japanese house so do not be surprised by the lack of square footage, which is well used and concisely designed. The house has all the modern conveniences: small fridge, microwave, washer/dryer and fabulous shower w/ waterfall shower head. We never once felt crowded or lacked room. Love the binder that Curtis left on both level with wifi info/passwords, restaurant recommendations, mini map of the surrounding neighborhood and other information we found helpful.

The prime location of the house is convenient to Hanamikoji Dori - major street with lots of restaurants and tourist - and Shijo Dori the main east/west road leading into central Kyoto. It's also very convenient to the train as well as bus routes. I would highly recommend this property as a base for your stay in Kyoto!

“Charming & Serene”
Reviewed 13 April 2017 for a stay in March 2017

This was my favorite spot we stayed in Japan. The most charming little street and a comfortable, authentic apartment with lovely finishes and the most gorgeous bathroom ever. So insanely quaint. Highly recommend this area of Kyoto with winding streets, temples and cute restaurants at every turn. The Indigo House is very thoughtfully remodeled and the staff were so so friendly and helpful. Love!

My parents, toddler and I stayed for 4 nights in November. There is nowhere better to stay in Kyoto (unless you're staying at another property owned by Curtis).

The area is both serene and atmospheric. It was also extremely convenient to get from the house to public transport, shops, supermarkets, and restaurants.

I adored the atrium within the house and the beautiful finishes on everything. It was a comfortable and relaxing haven to come back to after a day out and it was nice to stay at a property that has obviously been meticulously planned and is well maintained, with a focus on quality. Even the kitchen towels are from Williams Sonoma.

Lastly, Curtis and Junko were both excellent to correspond with. I plan on visiting Kyoto many more times in my lifetime and I can't think of a better place to stay than Indigo House or one of Curtis's other properties.

“Atmospheric home right in the heart of Kyoto”
Reviewed 8 January 2017 for a stay in November 2016

Despite it being in the centre of Gion, Indigo House was a super quiet home from home from where you could walk to nearly everything. The spacious bedroom and well fitted bathroom along with the thoughtfully designed kitchenette - complete with interior garden! - made great use of the space. Most of all though, the general design and choice of colours, furnishings etc was just really soothing. As soon as you got into the house you didn't really want to leave. Being able to wander the back streets of Gion and into Kennin-ji temple next door really added to our enjoyment of the city. Would definitely stay here or a similar kind of property again rather than a hotel if we come back. A real enhancement to our trip!

“Good location”
Reviewed 19 November 2016 for a stay in November 2016

We were very happy with our stay at Indigo House, lower level. The master bedroom was very luxurious for a couple, However the second bedroom was nowhere near the same standard. It is small with nowhere to put or hang your clothes. It faces the street and the outside 'wall' is just an extension of the metal front door, and the noise when the people renting upstairs open their half makes a racket. This wall needs insulation, and there was a terrible draft coming through. This said when I asked the management to do something about the freezing draft and the lights shining directly into the room through the glass wall, they did their best to make the situation better. The very modern amenities were great, some beyond the ken of an elderly traveller, the shower needs an engineering degree! I would highly recommend this accommodation for a couple, and it is located in a great area with good connections to public transport and cultural sites.
