“Beautifully restored Machiya (Old Tea House) in Gion”
Reviewed 15 November 2016 for a stay in October 2016

We booked both the lower and upper levels of Indigo house for ourselves and friends (2 couples) and we were in the lower house. We absolutely loved the restoration work done (looks exactly if not better than the photos on the website) - beautifully Japanese (I even noticed the very Japanese styled blinds) but with modern comforts (a small but very functional kitchenette, good bathroom and a very comfortable bed). Both the lower and upper levels (each set up "apartment style") come with an extra tatami style bed room. The main and "extra" tatami rooms are located on either side of each "apartment" so there is sufficient privacy if you want to share with another couple or have kids. The upper level's extra (tatami) room is a tad larger. If you have young kids/toddlers, you may prefer the lower level as it comes without a staircase. There is air-conditioning as well as heating (including the floors). The location is perfect for sight seeing in Kyoto and close to some very famous sights and temples. While Kyoto is touristy for most part of the year, Indigo house is located in a very quiet side street, just off the main tourist attractions in the heart of Gion (itself a must-see). It is very walkable to some of the more famous sights in Kyoto and across the river to Pontocho. I think what sets the Old Kyoto houses apart from other "self serviced" rentals is that the booking office doubles up as a concierge service and offers very personal service. Junko and Saki were most helpful from making restaurant reservations to routing out our journey to our next stop which was Awaji island. We also met Curtis briefly, the man behind Old Kyoto (and who was very hands on with our reservation). We can't wait to come back! Tip - make sure you print out the map the booking office sends you, so the taxi can locate it. Unlike The taxis in Kyoto mainly don't have GPS, so they really need the map (which comes with detailed instructions in Japanese). Oh, and they provide a local iPhone for free - very handy for google maps and getting around locally.

“great machiya experience in Kyto!”
Reviewed 27 June 2016 for a stay in May 2016

The little garden in the middle of the Indigo house was so charming! When it rained at night, I enjoyed listening to rain drops (it was so calming sound) in our comfy bed! The house which has nice mix of traditional and modern style is on a quite street. I liked good WiFi connection, and a washing machine/dryer was very convenient - started laundry in the morning and it was all done/dry when we came back at the end of the day : ) There were enough kitchenware/utensils although the kitchen was small. The place was super clean. It was nice to have a iphone for guests use and also umbrellas!

“Superb balance of traditional and modern design”
Reviewed 27 June 2016 for a stay in May 2016

Indigo House was recommended to me by a friend and I am so grateful. This is a gem of an apartment balancing the traditional machiya with modern design and comfort. The bedroom is large with a great view . The bed is really comfortable. The kitchen is small and perfectly functional. There is so much good food to buy from local department stores and it's really useful to have a kitchen, table and chairs. The bathroom is a total delight. Best I've experienced. The view to the internal garden is a feature, both from the living room and bathroom. The location is perfect, an interesting walk to temples, river and shops. There are some really nice restaurants nearby and Curtis Hawes and his staff know the area and are happy to help with suggestions and reservations. They were lovely. This is a gorgeous place, do yourself a favor and book.

“Great fusion of hi-tech convenience and traditional aesthetic”

We had the pleasure of being the first to stay at the Indigo House and enjoyed it immensely. The description is accurate: it is beautiful, light, airy and quiet. The rooms are a perfect blend of convenient technology and traditional aesthetic. You can hear insects. The indoor garden is not only beautiful; the glass doors slide open to let in fresh air. I can imagine how pleasant it will be in the warm months. The windows in the main bedroom also open to allow a through breeze, and a view into the open spaces. The bathroom is the best I have seen in Japan. There is plenty of storage space for unpacked clothes, and for getting luggage out of sight. The kitchen is compact but well designed. I like to cook and found everything there. All the equipment—cooking utensils and tableware—is of good quality; a pleasant extra, but one in keeping with the design of the apartment as a whole. The house is in a quiet lane right in the heart of the Gion, so walking to the supermarket, or in my case, to the subway for a commute, was itself a great Kyoto experience. Indeed, if you don’t want to go out, you can have one just by being there.

The proximity of other apartments owned by Curtis was useful for us: a friend took the house across the street. There are great restaurants around and Junko and Saki are both excellent guides and facilitators. As the website says, it is suitable for two or 3 adults, or a couple with children. The second bedroom is fine but small. The upper level does however have two good sized bedrooms, as does Amber House across the lane. We stayed there too and loved it.
A note to Tripadvisor: floor plans would make a really valuable addition to the information supplied for apartments. I like to see the juxtaposition of sleeping spaces, size of rooms etc. It was, for example, useful for me to know that the bedrooms in Indigo House are widely separated and so provide privacy.

“Kyoto Oasis”

What a lovely oasis in the heart of Kyoto! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Indigo House. After hours of magnificent temple hopping we loved coming home and relaxing in our own little home away from home. Whether soaking in the deep tub in the lovely bathroom with indoor garden, relaxing in the gorgeous spacious bedroom, or sitting in the kitchen for coffee and planning our next foray into this amazing city; the Indigo House met all of our needs. Beautiful touches like fresh flowers, the latest local guidebooks and even an iPhone for our personal use, made us feel quite at home. They have achieved a lovely modern restoration while still capturing the historic essence and flavor of the original house. On a pretty quiet side street but only minutes away from shopping, dining and wonderful people watching in the fascinating historic Gion district - the location was ideal. Bring your walking shoes - there is so much to see all within walking distance. Junko and Saki at Another World properties were just up the road and a phone call away to answer any questions we had about the house and the area. They were so accommodating and it was an added bonus to have such nice English speaking contacts nearby. We agreed that staying at this property really made our stay in Kyoto a very unique and special experience indeed!
