“Experiencing life in the most traditional manner in the Old Capital”
Reviewed 28 March 2016 for a stay in March 2016

After a week skiing in Hokkaido I planned a week with my partner in Kyoto and was searched for the ideal place to stay. I wanted to sty in Gion, having been to Kyoto two years previous staying in an affordable ryokan not far from the train station, I wanted to really experience Kyoto. The Amber House was the ideal accommodation for our week in Kyoto. We were right in the heart of the traditional area and in close proximity to the modern heart as well. With a kitchen and laundry facilities we could cater for ourselves for some meals as well as explore the vast array of great restaurants of all categories/price/styles.
Curtis, the owner and Saki, the manager, were extraordinarily helpful and made not only getting to the house for the first time easy, but also exploring the unique sights and experiences of Kyoto. They also helped us book some really interesting restaurants gave us valuable recommendations for local food experiences as well as organising to the taxi to get us back to the train station easily.
There are several supermarkets and an excellent Takashimya department store, with an amazing basement food hall, all within five minutes walk. The Nishiki market is just a few minutes further down Shijo Karasuma.
The best part of staying at Curtis' house was that we were able to just wander the many interesting streets of this fabulous historic place. Transport was easily accessible - train, bus and taxis were easy and plentiful, but walking by far the most rewarding.
A highlight of coming "home" after a days adventurous sightseeing was to catch up in the lounge with a bottle of wine and some nibbles before heading out to an interesting dinner!

“Wonderful accomodation and excellent location”
Reviewed 27 March 2016 for a stay in March 2016

ust returned from a wonderful six night stay at Amber House in the heart of the Gion area of Kyoto. Amber House is a spacious 2 bedroom house in an excellent location on a quiet residential neighborhood street which borders Kenninji Temple and is in ready walking distance to Kiyiomizu-dera Temple, Yasaka Shrine and other sites. Booking was easy, arrival information was straight forward and support staff were friendly and readily available. The house is thoughtfully furnished, comfortable and cozy. Curtis and staff have prepared a handy notebook of travel tips and recommendations. Great restaurants abound in Kyoto but we really enjoyed shopping in the nearby grocery store and cooking in the well-furnished kitchen. The eat in kitchen was our favorite room. The weather was chilly during our stay and we especially enjoyed the under floor heating of the kitchen and bath. The washer/dryer was an excellent amenity.

“Fantastic property for experiencing local Kyoto.”
Reviewed 10 February 2016 for a stay in December 2015

Awesome property to experience what it is like to live in an authentic Japanese home. Curtis and his team are world class. Every amenity you can imagine has been included in this property and their book on suggestions for what to do and where to eat is exceptional. Pay close attention to the restaurant suggestions. These are top notch eateries with amazing service. Do make sure you indulge in the cuisine of Kyoto and if there is ever a time to spend big of eating out, this is the place. I am a New Yorker living in Asia and have high expectations.

“Wonderful Way to Feel Connected to a Neighborhood”
Reviewed 1 December 2015 for a stay in November 2015

Now that jet lag has receded I feel ready to sing the praises of Amber House. While in Kyoto during our November trip to Japan my wife and I wanted to experience a little bit of the ambiance of a neighborhood and traditional house. Amber House proved to be exactly the thing we were seeking. The house is traditional and modern at the same time. It's very simply but comfortably furnished with delightful "Zen" appointments. Modern appliances are plentiful with labels in English decrypting the Japanese characters. We were only two people but the house would be very comfortable for four. One of the traditional elements is the door height. I'm about 6'-1" and had to learn to be humble and bow to the door gods.
The house is on a short dead end street and the neighborhood is very quiet. It feels very safe at night as, indeed, did everywhere we went in Kyoto after dark. The oldest Zen Temple in Kyoto (Kennin-ji Temple) is adjacent behind the house and the temple provides a gentle wake up ceremony every morning at 6:00 a.m. It was quite charming to be nudged out of slumber by a subtle drum and gong. For all you late sleepers, don't be alarmed. Its just a reminder that eventually you will want to get out of the comfortable bed or futon and see a little of the wonder that is Kyoto.
Being in the Gion area of Kyoto, Amber House is within easy walking distance of many of the well known temples, the Geisha District, many restaurants and shops. The Central downtown area and fabulous covered market across the river is also easily reachable on foot.
If we ever return to Kyoto (which is likely) we will certainly want to stay here again.
