We've just returned from our trip to Japan and our best accommodation was at Gojo Samurai Machiya in Kyoto. Everything was as described in the house listing and it was perfect for us. Our family of four - parents and two adult daughters - loved the experience of staying in such a traditional house in a local neighbourhood. We are return travellers to Japan and this was exactly the experience we were looking for. Highlights were the bathroom and the tatami rooms with underfloor heating during a very cold snap in early spring. Thanks to Patrick and Akiko for their hospitality - arranging a taxi with enough space for our luggage on the last evening was much appreciated. Highly recommended.
The instructions we received from the owner were spot on. This house is in a quiet location - perfect for experiencing a little bit of authentic Kyoto suburbia. It is walking and biking distance to town and if you show taxi drivers the address they can find it. The home had plenty of heating, towels and coffee and tea. The kids thought the mats were a little hard but they had never slept on them so they may take a bit of getting used to. The western beds were super comfy and the extra toilet upstairs with a bigger group a plus. The authentic artifacts added an extra touch. Would definitely stay there again.
We found the location great.....just a 20 minute walk to either the station or Gion. The house itself was well appointed, beds were comfortable and warm and I loved the bath!
Gojo Machiya was the perfect spot for us. After a couple of weeks of hotels we were ready for some home comfort. Gojo was lovely: compact but well furnished and a good mix of Western features and Japanese style. We loved the garden, in particular. The owners have paid a lot of attention to detail in both the design of the house and the decor.
Gojo is located in a cozy neighborhood, near a park and within walking distance of the main shopping street (Gojo Dori). Despite the proximity of neighbors it was always quiet.
Only two (small) caveats: as we are both tall we had to be careful about the low doorways; a list of supermarkets or nearby markets would have been helpful.
Otherwise: highly recommended.
We travelled a family of 5 (3 grown up kids).
My wife loved the house it was very homey,
we especially liked the living room area.
The kitchen was very well equipped with everything you need and more.
We had there a lot of Japanese bowls and chcopstiks, we felt Japanese :-).
It was also very spacey and decorated with antique looking Japanese art.
The beedroom up stairs ,especially the second bedroom, was small and the beds were not very comfortable, the up stairs Japanese room was fine.
The stairs themselves were steep and narrow and you also need to watch your head...
The shower and bathtub were excellent the only problem in the bathroom was a very small sink and dim light.
The property was as described (houses 6 people just fine), good neighborhood (my son played football with the local kids :) ) , location was good , 5 min walk from metro , super market , not far from Giyon and we got to everywhere just fine.
I missed a personal touch from the owners (one of the reasons I rent apartments/houses and not hotels, for years now) , the contact through e-mails/massages was good but we never met the owners , no one greated us on arrival to the apartment and the registration was done at an office away from the property (from were we needed to take our luggage to the house ourselves).
Overall we enjoyed our stay (and Kyoto ,the city, is great) and recomend this property.
