Hotel Monterey Kyoto
Ranked #38 of 376 Hotels / Ryokan in Kyoto
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 21 March 2012

The Hotel Monterey Kyoto was one of the best western-style hotels my husband and I have stayed at in Japan. Not only did we get an excellent deal, the location was convenient and the service was awesome. We will definitely book again on our next visit.

Pros
- Great price for a brand new hotel
- Very convenient (just a few minute walk from train stations and buses, close to shops and restaurants)
- Excellent customer service with English-speaking staff
- Very clean, very new, and fully furbished rooms
- Breakfast discount if you purchase ahead of time at the front desk

Cons
- No wi-fi

Other tips
- There's a Starbucks across the street and a grocery store very close by.
- Catching the train to the Airport? If you haven't taken advantage of the Japan Rail Pass promos for foreigners, stop by the JR ticket office at Kyoto Station, show your passport, and purchase a 1-Day Rail Pass for only 2000 Yen. You can use this to catch the express train to Kansai International Airport, which is a lot cheaper than purchasing a regular fare.
- Need approximate train arrival and departure train times? Go to www.jorudan.co.jp/english and input your departure and arrival locations and the time you want to depart or arrive. It will give you approximate schedules and fares. Very convenient! Works for subways too.

With 623 reviews already, it is difficult to say more than keep up the good work. Location is convenient to the subway (and everywhere in Kyoto), staff are very helpful. Through one of the online booking aggregators we were able to get an excellent price. While this is not a five-star luxury hotel, in its class it is flawless.

Located at central location. Walking distance to train stations and convenient stores. Hotel services are top notch. We had a great time staying there. Hotel staff converse in English, they even helped us locate a couple of bike rental shop during the festival last year.

Going there again later this year. Will definitely return to this hotel.

Fantastic hotel. There are 2 train stations which are both about 5 mins walk. Very helpful staff. We were upgraded when we checked in, room was the size of an average western hotel room. Very clean. Starbucks directly across road. 3 mini marts, 2 mins walk. No room service but lots of restaurants in walking distance. Buy a bus/ train pass from reception-save time and $$.

We stayed at Hotel Monterey for 3 nights at the beginning of March. Once again, we booked based on traveler reviews and price. We found a great 3 night deal on hotels.com, and it beat out the cost of staying in a traditional ryokan, but with with the modern conveniences. Please note, this is a modern boutique hotel, not your traditional Kyoto inn experience. The location to transport and historical areas, and value however made up for any lack of culture. The room was small by western standards, but all the furniture is efficient and nice. We loved the outlets at the bedside, night lights and built in clock on the head board. Also, a great perk is there is now in room WiFi! It was fast and never failed. We were even able to download movies on iTunes for our next train ride.
We arrived late on the first night, in the rain, but still found a number of great noodle shops and restaurants in very close walking distance. We did spend one night walking Gion and found it a bit far to walk back, so we opted for the subway which we learned closed after midnight. Without any hassle we found a taxi who with no trouble at all took us right to the hotel's doorstep for under 1000 yen. We otherwise used the Karasuma Oike subway station every day for a starting point for all sightseeing. There is a 500 yen subway day pass I would recommend.
All and all we would stay again at the Hotel Monterey. One last night, I did enjoy the hotel's public onsen on the penthouse level...and found it lovely and worth the 1750 yen. There were 4 bathing pools, including one actually outside at the corner of the building. Bring a magazine and enjoy the lounge that's connected to the spa after your soak...it has great panoramic views of the city and cozy leather recliner lounge chairs.
One last suggestion is to ask for a non-smoking floor, if possible. We had a non-smoking room...but I still noticed a little smell of smoke from time to time from the other smokers on the floor.

Room Tip: Request non-smoking floor and Superior double room for not quite a western queen bed, but larger tha...
