Owner description: Arashiyama is a small town on the Oi River. Its moon-crossing bridge, Togetsu-kyo, is a beautiful, much-beloved wooden structure. Arishiyama also has Tenryu-ji temple, one of the 14 World Heritage Sites in Kyoto.

Nice place to spend time an afternoon there with sights of cherry blossom in the park and a nice walk along the river. Quite a popular place with the locals.

Arashiyama is a smart outer suburb of Kyoto, with sights and activities. I saw the bamboo forest, but did not think much of it. The bridge and scenes around the river are very beautiful. The monkey park is good. Tenryuji temple is very beautiful. There are also plenty of shops selling good quality tourist merchandise. Arashiyama is worth half a day to a day out if you have time in Kyoto.

It was busy when we went but it is school holidays and it is cherry blossom season. We thought Arashiyama was a really pretty place - lots to see and do: temples, gardens, parks, walk by the river, souvenir shopping, plenty of restaurants. It was a lovely day out with our kids. If you don’t want to eat in a restaurant, you can buy food or make a picnic and find a spot in a park or by the river to enjoy hanami.

Arashyama is not far out of Kyoto and makes for a pleasant, if demanding, day trip.
There are two ways to get there, arriving either at Arashyama station or Saga Arashimyama station. We chose the former.
From the station, you walk to the river and turn left to go to the monkey park. This is a steep climb uphill (anyone with poor gait, heart problems, walks with a stick or gets winded easily should avoid it). I also would think a stroller or pram would make this a no-no.
The monkeys come with all sorts of dire warnings about how close to get, what not to do with food and where not to point cameras/smartphones. But the monkeys seemed to largely ignore the throngs of tourists and provided plenty of entertainment by having a family squabble, swinging of the cages around windows and performing all sorts of stunts on the roof.
The descent is far easier than the climb.
One then walks across the bridge (unless you want to hire a rowboat) and up the long path to the bamboo avenue.
An amazing site it stretches for a hundred metres or so with towering bamboo on both sides.
There are rickshaws towed by enthusiastic young men for those who want to do it in a leisurely fashion.
There are hundreds of food stalls and plenty of toilets.
The environs are beautiful and ideal for a picnic.
I’d leave before four o’clock to avoid a Tokyo-style crowd at either station.

A ten minute walk from the Saga-Arashiyama station the bamboo forest is a walk through a narrow path within an actual bamboo plantation. There isn’t anything else to see, however is worth seeing how this wonderful plant grows and is exploited. Our teenage son enjoyed it as well.
