All at the train stations are amazing. They are cities unto themselves. They have hotels, food galore and more shop for shopping than you have time for.
They are all exceptionally clean and organized.
While daunting and overwhelming, they work brilliantly. It's possible to master train travel. Just pay attention.
The trains running on time. If it says that the train is leaving at 15:05,it does! You need to be early. If you are a minute late, your train has left without you!
All announcements in the station and on the trains are made in Japanese and English.
The train system is a marvel. We should be ashamed of the train system in the US by comparison.
Definitely go by train.

An outstanding piece of architecture from the inside with a series of majestic escalators taking you on a fascinating orientation of the building up one side then across the skyway and down the other embracing an auditorium.
If that’s not enough then just people watch the thousands that seem to traverse the area every hour.

Architecturally this station complex is beyond grand.

The shopping complex is huge and the eating opportunities are almost endless. No station "greasy spoon" places here. Locals come here to eat rather than passengers only.

The big staircase art installation with its led lights is a must see.

Our tour guide told us one arriving at Kyoto station that it was worth taking the escalators to the top before heading for our hotel so we obediently did so. Only this way can one take in the huge size of this station ( 13 floors) which was apparently rebuilt without disturbing the train traffic ( unthinkable elsewhere I believe) The views over Kyoto from the very top are amazing. The stairs are amazing too, we arrived in the evening and so they were lit up in a cherry blossom motive which was stunning. Even if one does arrive in kyoto by train it is worth coming here to take in this wonderful piece of architecture

One of the most interesting train stations I’ve seen so far in Japan. It is constructed mainly with steel frames which can be admired best while going up or down the escalators leading or coming from the roof garden 12 floors up. Isetann shopping complex is connected seamlessly to the station building through the escalators or stairs.
