We recently had five days in Kyoto and five in Tokyo. We tried Omen on a recommendation and, after walking around for quite some time trying to find it stumbled across it just as we were about to give up. So glad we persisted! The noodles in the ramen were the softest and freshest we had in the whole of Japan and tasted fantastic. It's about a 10 minutes walk down from the Ginkaku-ji temple. Absolutely recommended!

Great hot or cold udon lunch sets in a beautiful, traditional restaurant very close to the Silver Temple (Ginkaku-ji) and the northern end of the Philosopher's Path. Even though it was te most expensive udon we ate our entire time in Japan, I still thought the lunch set was reasonably priced considering the very high quality of all the artistically-presented food, the tatami room setting, and the attentive service.

We went today, based on their trip advisor score. A really amazing lady helped us to find them (just off the start of the hill to the temple, near to a car park).

We looked at the menu and asked whether one of the set menus was for 4 people - 2 adults and 2 children. The waitress said it was so we ordered it.

The food was good, but when the bill came it was very expensive - they had charged us for FOUR adult set meals.

I tried in my limited Japanese to explain that there had been a mistake but the man at the till had 'no English' and I had poor Japanese. So we paid in full and left.

For what we had it was very expensive :( and I felt it was mid-sold to us.

Omen is definitely on the tourist trail, being well located for Ginkaku-ji and the Philosopher's Path, but don't let that put you off. Specialising in noodles and tempura we had an excellent supper here at the 'bar'. There are also low tables for you to sit at if you wish to.

It's a reasonable size by many Japanese restaurant standards, arranged over two floors, but it gets very busy at lunch time catering for visitors. It's in a residential area (rather than 'downtown') so in the evening it is quieter without being deserted. I'd suggest it's best to go in the evening, but it won't be a bad choice at lunchtime if you are visiting Ginkaku-ji as longs a you don't mind waiting for a table.

The noodles were tasty and well prepared, the pickles excellent and the tempura vegetables crisp and tasty. It's not 'haute cuisine' but good value and makes for a pleasant evening.

This was our first meal in Kyoto and very good it was too! My son is not a massive udon fan but even he loved it. He had the tempura and udon meal while I had the seasonal meal which also cam with udon. Both were gorgeous, especially enjoyed adding our own ingredients to the broth. The seasonal dishes were superb too - and terrific value for money. Lovely restaurant, sat at the tatamis and had great service too.
