Okonomiyaki is a bit of an acquired taste. It is a pancake with flour, yam, shredded cabbage, green onion and other ingredients often topped by sweet Worcestershire sauce, bonito flakes and mayonnaise. When cooked in front of you, it looks like a hot mess but it tastes delicious.

Hanamarutei is a great choice for okonomiyaki in Kyoto. They offer all sorts of varieties of the dish, including versions with extra crepes, extra cabbage and even yaki soba noodles. I had the pork and kim chee version with yaki soba noodles for about 1300 yen and it was terrific.

We ordered 3 teppanyaki dishes and 1 okonomiyaki. Everything came in an aluminum foil and not one single thing was fit for human consumption. Thank god for the cold beer. Do not eat here.

Even if you are not so keen on Japanese food yet, Okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake, or literally "fry it as you like it"), is always a safe bet. This place offers a great Special Seafood & Spring Onion Okonomiyaki "Kaisen Spesharu Negi Yaki" which was delicious. They will bring the mix to your own personal hot plate on your table and you just watch it cook. Once it is ready, the waitress will prepare it for you and then ....enjoy!
They have great draught beer ('nama bi-ru') but if you want to enjoy it as you find it in the UK, i.e. mainly beer in the glass rather than several mouthfuls of froth, then ask for 'awa nashi' (no head).

It's a bit tricky to find the restaurant, but if you take the Kyoto Station Building South Elevator (Ekibiru minami erebe-ta-) up to the 11th floor, you will find "The Cube" with several restaurants. Walk around and you'll find this one - it is the only Okonomiyaki place and has pancakey-looking plastic replicas from the menu in the window.
