You couldn't find a better spot to tour Kyoto and surrounding sites as it sits within Kyoto Station. Restaurant selection is broad and even better on the 10th floor of the mall. The rooms are efficient and clean and many have great views of Kyoto Tower. The only complaint I have is their pool rules are bizarre. I had my 17 and 15 year old sons traveling with me and thought a dip in the pool after sightseeing in 90 degree heat would be nice. You have to be 20 or over to use the pool, and no it is not a traditional Japanese bath, unless you go from 7-9 in the morning. No one could explain why but that's the rule. Aside from that it was a good stay.

The Hotel Granvia was my first introduction to Japan, and I wouldn't have had it any other way.

The Granvia is located within the JR train station, which is architecturally stunning. The modern sleekness of the train station is juxtaposed against the warm and soft feel of the hotel rooms. The lighting in the rooms presents an inviting ambiance and ushers in soothing relaxation. You can easily use the JR station as your local travel hub and visit many places by the local trains (be aware that there can be many stops), express/rapid trains (few select locations) and Shinkansen (bullet train to larger destinations - I recommend the JR pass; well worth it, and a visit to Japan warrants a ride on the Shink).

Since the hotel is located in the train station, you can check out of your room, store your luggage in a train station locker, and adventure for the day without having to check-in at another location until evening or the next night (if you take a sleeper train somewhere). Japan can be expensive, but you can live the luxury, do the adventure, and maintain a reasonable budget if you get creative.

If I'm in Kyoto again, I will definitely be staying at the Granvia again.

Room tip: Request a high floor, the city views are great at night.

We chose this hotel for our 4 night stay in Kyoto based on the reviews on Trip Advisor & the sharp price on Agoda. It has turned out to be a great choice, as its located as part of the very modern development at the Kyoto Station. The rooms are great, the beds soft, both LAN & wi-fi internet are fast & free, the facilities are excellent & the Concierge team (Shogo the guy & Ayaka the lady) both have fantastic English & are a great source of advice on where to visit in the region. Their restaurant recommendations have been excellent, with many just a 5 minute walk from the Hotel Granvia. The unexpected gem is that the massive Japanese store Isana is within the complex. Their food hall is a great way to be exposed to the unique cuisine of the country, with many dine-in & take-away options. The only negative is that the hotel charges Y1050 for each use of their in-door swimming pool, so it can get quite expensive if used several times each day, as is likely in the middle of a hot (39' C or 100' F) Summer. This charge is not disclosed on Agoda nor on the hotel's own website.

Room tip: Make the most of the Concierge team, as they )Shogo & Ayaka) are both very communicative, enthusiastic & provided us with lots of great advice, which in every case has turned out to be a great experience.

Great base to explore Kyoto.Built within Kyoto station, itself a modern marvel of architecture and artworks,it is easy to access the many attractions this city has to offer. Rooms are roomy and ours had a great view over the city to the surrounding green hills.Staff are excellent and there is a choice of approx 10 restaurants within the hotel and another 190! within the station itself. The shinkansen stops below and gives you fast access to the rest of Japan. The station even has a rooftop garden.Concierge service very helpful. Highly recommended. Only negative was a charge every time you used the gym or pool.

Room tip: Club level gives you a room on the higher floors and better views

We stayed 4 days at the Granvia and found it to be excellent. It is clean and modern, and wonderfully located for travel in and out of the city. Everything is at your front door. Department store is adjacent and offers wonderful dining options. The lobby and top floor lounge and restaurants are wonderful. The rooms are spacious and QUIET despite the railway below. The staff were very helpful, and the concierge was attentive to respond to my various emails. My only disappointment was not having a room close to the elevator that I had requested.
