Simple and sparse are two words that I would use for this Ryokan. You sleep on the floor. You have a very Japanese breakfast (savoury fish!). You bathe with other guests in a common soak tub, naked. A very relaxing experience once you get used to it.

Room Tip: Not facing the street.

Not knowing what to expect we booked this hotel. Central located in the old part of Kyoto the hotel is small and very intimate. We ate there for 2 dinners and had really good food. The breakfasts were great. The staff were very capable of recommending restaurants, booking cabs, etal.

We did not stay here but had lunch. Our favorite dish of our entire 9 days in Japan was the Yuzu porridge. It was unlike anything we ever had. A rice porridge with fish, eggs and a yuzu squeezed into the center. A lovely 4 course meal.

Great location to Gion. It's like a different world once you enter. Very traditional and cute place for a full experience of ryokan with wooden bath and elaborate breakfast. Both service and room met my expectation.  Atmospheric place for Japanese culture. We had peaceful quiet sleep. Attentive service. They have their own yuzu soap!

for someone travelling first time to Japan this Ryokan is certainly an option, but there are so many things which irritate even a seasoned traveller coming from a western culture.
the staff is kind, tries its best and the level of English is surprisingly ok, not like in a St. Regis or Ritz Carlton, but one can get around.
The whole building is built for small people, I am 197 cm and it feels all very small. So if you are not tall, than it is ok I suppose.
The rooms are evenly tiny, they undo the bed during breakfast which does not give you a chance to rest anywhere in the room until late evening, when they prepare the bed again.
Asking twice to NOT undo the futon bed and leaving it on the floor was unsuccessful, each time we came up the bed made put back into the wardrobe.
the bathrooms are cheap, tiny but part of the minimalistic concept I guess.
Service generally kind, breakfast you can choose between continental and japanese. Even an absolute lover of Sushi and Sashimi may not get used to the different tastes a japanease breakfast offers you. I somehow realized first time how a poor Japanese must feel when is being offered sausages for breakfast in the western world.... :))
All in all, worth a night to have the feel of a traditional Ryokan, but not more.
Also, especially during festive season outrageously expensive paying some 750 USD per night/room.

Room Tip: definetely have a room in the back
