This citadel was built by Peter the great.
This complex is the most important historical monument.
The Peter and Paul cathedral with its tallest golden spire stands tall amongst all the historical buildings.
The most significant of all are the tombs of the Czars and queens.
If you wish to know Russian history then you just cannot miss this place.

We only wandered around and didn't visit any exhibitions but the place is very impressive and definitely worth spending more hours than we did. Great view of St. Petersburg.

Within walking distance of the city centre there is plenty to see within the fortress walls. Primarily our visit was to see the Peter and Paul Cathedral. You can chart the history of pre revolutionary St Petersburg through the tombs of the rulers from Peter to the last Czar and there is a very good exhibit of photographs and articles which helps explain how intertwined are the Royal houses across Europe. Allow a full day to see it all. There is a cosy little cafe serving a great selection of cakes and a warming bowl of borscht if it takes your fancy.

Nothing to see inside of Peter/Paul cathedral!!! Wasted money. That is just a graveyard! Fences everywhere. Terrible place. Everything except that is nice.

The St Peter and Paul Fortress is a historically significant landmark in St Petersburg and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Founded by Peter the Great in 1703, the fortress was built during the Northern War. Over the years, it served as a base for the city garrison and it was also a prison for political prisoners.

A beautiful cathedral stands proud within fortress walls, its spire seemingly piercing the St-Petersburg sky. This Russian Orthodox cathedral has a unconventional Baroque exterior rather than the usual onion-domed style.

Inside, western religious architecture and Russian design are beautifully combined. Its unique iconostasis, golden gilded trimmings, ceiling paintings and impressive chandeliers give this cathedral its splendor.

This was my second visit and the sumptuous interior of the cathedral again left me in awe!

This cathedral is also the resting place of the Romanov dynasty. It also appears to be the home to a sleepy calico cat.
