I was sceptical to go to the restaurant with my boyfriend as in some places they tend to speculate on people's feelings of nostalgia towards Soviet times. It is probably the same phenomenon as "nostalgia" in Germany -- goods and services related to that time tend to be overpriced. But the renovated C.D.L. has turned out to cast away the scepticism. There is still the chandelier that Stalin presented to Gorky. The menu contains both soviet cuisine (immaculately cooked) and some new dishes (like burgers).

This is an incredible space with an incredible history. The restaurant has recently been separated from the rest of the Central House of Writers with different owners and, apparently, now a different chef (someone quite "trendy" in Russia and known for molecular gastronomy, as if it's a new thing!). The wine list is pricey but good quality. The service is very formal, stiff, but not bad. However, the disgrace comes with the management. The menus printed online and even offered to guest don't reflect what's actually available. The set menu listed on the printed menu (2000 rub) has been replaced by one that is 3900 rub (on insert) and of lesser quality and interest. Gone are the caviar blinis and beef cheeks, replaced by a cutlet and a "Russian snack". I kept being promised the menu reflects the chef's famed molecular gastronomy but am entirely not sure how cutlets and a mushroom soup factor in. The clientele was sparse and almost entirely foreign, ordering likely on expense accounts. Nothing is going on here anymore, and the management keeps the old menu up to attract people into the restaurant, where they then go on to charge you double for a cheaper menu. To add insult to injury - they say they are in the "process" of changing over to an entirely new molecular gastronomy menu. Perhaps customers don't wish to be part of the process? A disgrace.

Magic atmosphere in an authentic house of XIX century with its original furniture, boiserie, painting, pictures, carved timber columns and stairs, art deco jewel of central Moscow. Food is adequately high class with succulent starters and superb main courses, including game, Russian/French style. Cellar is full of great bottles, including finest champaigne and Armenian brandy as good as best cognac. Crew is extremely professional and attentive and - upon request - they organize a tour of the house, consisting of 11 rooms in most of which you can eat sitting down in the original chairs and enjoying belle epoque russian songs from a nice singer. Unforgettable dinner. Be prepared to pay adequately for a lavish experience.

There are Russian restaurants with more famous names in Moscow, but there you might come across issues with booking and they will be over-crowded. CDL is not as famous but is much better. The interior of CDL is great, the food is superb. I highly recommend this place for foreign guests of Moscow.

The restaurant is located on a queit street. It is immpresive the way they decorated it and how the space was used.
We had a booking, but it was not in the main area. They managed to accomodate us in the mail room and that was fantastic. The atmosphere here was indeed the one of an elegant and fancy place. It was not crowded, the tables kept a good distance from eachother.
The service was ok, as we tolde them we had a fixed hour to leave and they were expecting other guest at the table
The food was excellent. The oysters were delicious and so were the Siberian veal dumplings. The Moscovski Borsch was delicious and so was the beef-Stroganof. The platting is spectacular for each dish. The desert looked well but they were not that tasty.
They do have a large variety of vines, expensive one, but among the best in the wold. We had Sancere and Chianti - very pleased with them
The place is expensive but it worths.
