Description: Vanil is status. Personalities of the owners, Arkady Novikov, Stepan Mikhalkov, Fedor Bondarchuk, a famous Russian director, interior from a famous architect Juri Andreev, the view from the window, altogether creates the atmosphere of the restaurant, which is the atmosphere of success. It was not without reason that right from the beginning the restaurant won the popularity of a mature successful audience. Furthermore, saying “Vanil” we mean Bohemia, secular audience, elite. The movie about a beautiful life. This is the right place to partake in a feeling of belonging to this state of mind. Everything stars from the interior. Juri Andreev in one his interviews says: "The space of the restaurant is universal. In the interior as to the form, untroubled by any pronounced history, you can put any desired content. The interior is fashionable without any intellectualizing. It's a loft studio. This is one integrated area, of inward and outward openness. It's decorations of a modern play”. “Vanil” is current. A place solely for successful people. And the loser should be left in tears: this city doesn't believe in tears, it believes in success. Restaurant “Vanil” opened July 5, 2001.

...for the given quality, taste and appearance.
We were visiting the Temple across the street, and this place was our choice simply because it was nearest (rain started). It was not planned visit to a restaurant.
This place was fancy and contemporary a couple years ago (or more). We saw many parked (improperly) SUVs and drivers/guards waiting their bosses to come out of the restaurant (at least an indication of a price tag).
First, we were not served by the order of entering (there were 5-6 tables occupied on the terrace) because we ordered beverages, without food.
Rain started and we ordered food - which changed waiter's attitude from stone-faced to a cordial.
Menu is rather concise (no prices listed for coffee, water, etc.). We ordered two relatively simple salads (fresh vegetables mainly), two coffees, two waters, two glasses of Riesling and we ate grilled salmon as main. Rounded up - 150$ (50$ went on wine, 50$ on salmon).
Quite expensive for "nothing special" of a taste and appeal.
Service was, in general, ok, restaurant is clean...
There is no reason really why should you go there, unless you are not an angry owner of black jeeps and bodyguards.

Vanil used to be famous and can't get over it. Its the epitome of a certain kind of pre-crisis Moscow eatery where the cheapest wine on the menu used to be $100 and the food was minimalist-pretentious. Times have changed but Vanil hasn't - the food is perfectly fine, and the view of Christ the Savior is nice. Moscow is a great foodie city these days - go elsewhere for food and luxury.

I've been there two years ago and a friend of mine recently and we agree that restaurant is very posh, the interior design and atmosphere are fantastic. Very good service, a little bit expensive but worth it.

Brilliant dinner here. The tomatoes tasted like the ones you find in the Mediterranean and the huge tender octopus tentacles were better than scallops or lobster. Super service too but as is typical in Moscow, they don't get the concept of wine by the full bottle! Maybe I'm just greedy but those funny little half bottles didn't cut the mustard.....
