What a disappointment it was to arrive after an exciting trip on the Panama Railroad to this dirty, busy, and totally lacking in any cultural value city. The traffic was horrific and we could not get out of this city fast enough. It is hard to understand why ships stop here and call this visit Panama. What a horrible impression visitors have of Panama if they think this is the real Panama. It is a shame that cruise ships do not have the capability of stopping instead on the Pacific which is completely gorgeous. We used this visit to Colon to move on to Portobelo and Isla Grande which were very invigorating to visit and swim in the Caribbean sea.

With a lot of road works going on traffic was heavy but lots os alternate ways to get to your destination,With your Passport you are permitted to shop at the Free Trade Zone, good deals, And if you get a good local driver he or she can take you to taste the authentic Flavor of Panama,Coconut rice and your choice of sea food,Real treat, you should take your time to do it. There is no reason to venture into Colon, which is dirty, uninviting and - if you believe all warnings - unsafe. Any food, beverage and shopping needs can easily be met in the protected cruise terminal zone.

A mix-up caused my wife and I to miss the tour to the Gatun locks we had booked, so we decided to hire a taxi. We had no trouble finding a licensed driver, made sure we could communicate, expressed our needs, negotiated a price and took off to the Gatun locks.

After a ride of less than 30 minutes through the countryside and the old Canal Zone we arrived at security perimeter guarded by an armed soldier. Since we had not booked through a tour we did not have the proper pass, but our driver convinced the man we were harmless Americans and we were admitted.

We drove near the locks themselves, and were able to take pictures, but we could not stop long nor get closer since, again, we did not have the right pass. We could not enter the visitor center since tickets are sold only by tours in town.

On our return the driver took us into the heart of Colon. It's a dump, but the driver proudly showed us his boyhood home, his school, his apartment, his church and pictures of his lovely 12 year old daughter before returning us to the secure zone. We needed to show ID to enter.

The next day our ship transited the Canal and we had a bird's-eye view of of the Gatun locks.

Book a tour, stay in the terminal area and forego a journey into Colon, unless you want to see Rodolfo's school.

Listen, I'm a "bright side" kind of person, but there was nothing good about the city of Colon. Our train ride there was fantastic! But once there, it's....filthy, feels dangerous, and all the sites (fuerte Lorenzo) are far away. Don't go...unless you like to ride trains. Sorry, Colon.

Whilst in any country we try to get an insight into the villages towns and cities. Colon is not the safest of places to visit and we were warned to take only a yellow taxi. The driver whisked us through the streets with great skill whilst explaining that he had been mugged here 4 times, twice for all his takings in the taxi and twice on foot for his belongings, even his shoes!
The streets reminded us of Cuba, with signs of earlier glory with huge mansions with intricate architecture but now sadly rotting away in decay. Slums and dirty streets along the way.
We got our insight into Colon but can hardly recommend it as a must see destination
