The rooms in this hotel is just great, quite large with very comfortable beds. A nice pool with an outdoor bar and the sea just meters away.

The restaurant is on the expensive side, but the food served is of a very high quality. The breakfast is also very good.

We were perplexed at the very entrance to see none to receive with hospitality which a four star hotel claims. As we proceed , we couldnt find anything which is amazing or enthusiastic that a fort come hotel hosts. we visited during the end of summer season during Eid and was surprised to see nothing which exhibits the festival nor the culture.
Coming to the room facilities ..It's spacious.. but the water was too hot in the bathrooms that we couldnt even wash our hands. And poor room service, wet floor becoz of AC and my child fell down and got hurt. very expensive restaurant and the food was not up to mark. swimming pool is big, though it is untidy and the nearest beach is terrible with black soil mud and shabby surroundings . They could have atleast maintain a small area to the beach private and clean. Not at all worth for the money we paid.

Room tip: no suggestion

I'm surprised to find myself critical of a property that looks like a fort, has a large and gorgeous pool, is on an inviting beach and was, I'm told, once owned by the Sultan to provide guests with a place to stay during visits. Our rooms had several stained glass windows. Staff were all very nice and spoke sufficient English. Our room (chalet), #17, is very large and clean. It is in the old part of the complex, preferred, I think and near to the restaurant and gym.
However, I'm not sure if I should be giving a hotel a 3 since we had NO HOT WATER! The swimming pool was much warmer and more inviting than our lovely but cool bathtub. Sometimes it got up to faintly warm.
Although staff were all very nice, routine service was lacking. I asked for more bottles of water for our room twice and got half the number of bottles requested. Some days we didn't get hand towels, or got a wash cloth instead of a hand towel. One of the bedside lamps didn't work. I reported it twice, at it seems to have ended there. Our AC was either on or off - there was no way to adjust it. Amenities (shampoo, etc) were scant and tiny. Our room had a kitchen area w a frig, sink, cupboards and drawers. There were no supplies - plates, glasses, flatware, etc. There was a water kettle with tea and coffee (tea wasn't replaced). Wifi worked well in one room, but not in the bedroom. I was given good information on places to see in the area, and after waiting in vain for 30 min for a taxi, Alli, at reception drove me in his own car to my destination and picked me up later.
In summary, our chalet was large, clean and attractive, but it didn't function very well.
The restaurant breakfast was good, and the made to order eggs were better than most. Dinner was slow and the food was ok, but not great. Generally, too greasy.
The gym was cool enough and had sufficient cardio machines as well as mats and free weights.

Room tip: Choose the old fort section. Newer rooms feel out of the way. Chalets offer lots & lots of space. #17 is near the restaurant and gym.

This hotel used to be The hospitality palace for The Sultan guests. It's directly by the Indian Ocean, and, during late summer early autumn, you'll be able to see many migrant turtles. The ex-palace has a new and modern building, so, at check in, you can choose to have an old and classic room, or a modern and conventional one. I chose the sultan's guest room. They also have a very nice traditional Arabian courtyard with plenty of nice colored glass and wooden ceilings.

They hotel is undergoing a major renovatiion, so, you'll enjoy it even more after September 2015. They'll speed up the internet and upgrade the TV channels, as well as the restaurants, courtyard, beach, etc. I like it very much and do plan to stay there again.

Sohar is not a major tourist destination, but it's about to become one with many activities and additions. It's more of an industrial destination with the major expansion of the Sohar industrial zone and also the free zone.

It's so close to the UAE border, which makes it attractive for various activities and diversified themes.

There are things that I didn't like in the hotel. The competency of the staff are sometimes frustrating. They seem to be too ignorant or confused. They don't understand good english or Arabic either. You order something but get something else.

The bathroom doesn't have any hooks to hang clothes on. There are not enough or comfortable space for toiletries or personal items while washing face, or when ladies are applying make up.

The room doesn't have enough electric plugs, and no plan for international sockets. I asked for an adaptor, but everytime they bring something it doesn't work.

The gates to the beach need to be opened a little more hours allowing for swimming in the day, but also strolling in the evening.

The restaurant staff are really friendly and helpful, but they don't have enough choices or tools to provide better services.

The prayer room is very small and way out of the way. Too far out.

The garden area can be much nicer if taken care of.

I liked the theme but the service needs to be better.

Room tip: Choose a traditional and historical Sultan room, or a modern conventional room. Rooms by the beach, the swimming pool, or a garden view.
