Reading previous reviews and looking at photographs of 'La Maison des Artistes' we were feeling excited about our stay. When we arrived we were overwhelmed by a strong smell of musty cat pee and a hotel that was clearly in need of a good clean! Everything looked dirty, the whole place smelt terrible and the furniture tired and worn.

The room we booked was called ' Patio - Venezia' so we were expecting a room with a patio...instead we had a room with one small skylight and no windows...which also smelt of cat pee. The room was very expensive for Moroccan standards but this was not reflected in the quality of the room.

We had booked 2 nights at the hotel but decided on our first night there that we would leave a day early (even though we would be charged), we didn't want to ruin the short time we had in Morocco in a place that made us feel so uncomfortable.

The breakfast should have been fantastic - fruit salads, eggs, bread...but all served sitting on dirty sofas in a dirty living room...so really unappetising.

The owner was pleasant but this didn't make up for the standard of the hotel.

We have stayed in fantastic riads and hotels in Morocco for much cheaper than 'La Maison Des Artistes'. This hotel is dirty and in need of renovation, not worth the money!

This is an absolutely terrific place. The view is magnificent and the location is right in the heart of medina, the best part of it. Isabelle the owner is a very kind person and you get every support you need. The place is also special because many movies have been shot here, e.g. Gladiator or Game of Thrones. I had the Cesars Loft on the very top of the building and the view is incomparable. It's a bit more expensive than the other rooms but it's worth it. And you sleep in the same bed as Robert Plant who has also spent time there :-)

Room Tip: Cesars Loft is the best room

Another return visit for us to this fascinating property in a city that is in the midst of change, yet is still well worth a visit. Isabelle and her team ensure that all is done to make guests really welcome in her uniquely furnished home: and a sunset viewed over the ramparts from the terrace is very special. It would be impossible for us to visit Essaouira and not spend time at La Maison des Artistes.

I was going to stay here but had an accident which made it impossible for me to climb steps. Isabelle was in touch with me a lot during my reservation process and later as well. She was always extremely kind and understanding. I know that she would treat all her customers in such a way and I am really sorry I didn't get to meet her. I also really wanted to see the property but it was not possible, unfortunately.
