While the facilities and ambience of this hotel are superb, what makes it a special place is the dedication of the staff. Everyone is genuinely pleased to see you, and to help with anything. Minor problems, even when it is only a lost pashmina, are dealt with eagerly. The food was magnificent in range and quality, and the desserts in L’Artisan can only be described as sensational. The chef was even prepared to share his recipes, delivering a printed cooy to our room before we had actually finished our meal.

This was the second time we have been to St Geran. The recent refurb has made it even better. Can't wait to go back. Delicious food, very luxurious rooms, fabulous watersports and staff. I wish we were back there now, already!

We stayed with our two children for 9 nights in March 2018. The property, staff and food are absolutely fantastic. Michele is possibly the best General Manager we have come across. We can't wait to go back!

I’ve been coming to the St Geran since 1986 when it was one of the first luxury resorts which put Mauritius on the map as a stylish European client oriented resort. In 1986 it appealed to a European elite and I remember being charmed by the genuine hospitality of the Mauritian staff. The small airport was thronged with people selling goods and felt much like India. The resort was and still is in the island’s unparalleled best location with a coral (shark free) protected front on the sea side and a large lagoon in the back ideal for water sports. It was all very simple, genuinely elegant and guests would come from distant locations to enjoy this Indian Ocean resort. It had less amenities then today but the service was outstanding - I remember being served on our porch a six course meal with each course being brought individually at perfect intervals. I went deep sea fishing and returned with a tuna which was immediately prepared and served to the hotel guests. It was very memorable.

In the 90s the resort went through its first renovation and as expected the facilities were improved. A swanky spa and pool were added, the tennis courts were moved from the heliport area (too windy) to an area behind near the Kids club and a run down hotel on the back lagoon was purchased and removed. The resort kept all its charm and the facilities were expanded and the food was improved. I visited many times in the nineties and until 2014 - generally in the Easter season which is the post cyclone period when the weather is best, the water very warm and the days are still fairly long. I remember a few memorable stays when we were seated next to iconic French movie stars with whom we became acquainted or waterskiing with well known princesses. The resort was magical, the children had a great time and we as parents were able to relax in this secluded, protected environment. The resort offered just the right balance of activities and leisure. The other guests were generally discrete but open to socializing if approached. The blend was as always sophisticated where you needed it to be and simple where it should be. Other then the sheer beauty of its location, the abundant vegetation, the carefully manicured gardens, the views in all directions from sunrise to sunset and all this with the backdrop of an intriguing multicultural island which was a delight to explore. Mauritius has been influenced by the Dutch (shame for the dodo bird), the British (left hand driving) and French (wonderful food and culture) and all this resting on a very diverse rich Indian / Muslim / African / Chinese cultural and religious core.

The reason I mention this is that I’ve visited many of the classic luxury Indian Ocean destinations such the Seychelles / Maldives and always felt they were artificially constructed ungenuine environments whose main purpose was attracting tourists to spend money in resorts far removed from the surrounding realities. Quite the contrary for Mauritius.

This brings me to the main purpose of this review - the St Geran has gone through a complete renovation in 2017 - has it maintained its appeal ?

In one word - yes - a resounding yes.

The refurbished St Geran has kept most of the good features of before 2017 and made many substantial additions. It has traded a very small fraction of its « old world » charm for resolutely improved, expanded, modernized and stylized improvements.

Notable among the improvements is a better use of the grounds. By creating a new pool and lunch restaurant area near the helipad (an area which was rarely used) - facing the sunset - guests now have this center of activity to migrate to during the day. This resolved a pre 2017 issue where the central pool and the terrace restaurant were in the same location which at times caused congestion. Guests are now spread all along the seaside in a more agreeable manner and the new pool area acts as an additional center of activity and sustenance.

The second big change is the new expanded kids club, vastly improved sports center, fitness room, tennis courts (3), paddle tennis courts etc which have been moved closer to the resort near to the reception. More convenient and a much more complete offering then pre 2017.

The third improvement are the rooms which have all been redone in a very tasteful way - with lots of style. Wood floors instead of cold tile. Bathrooms which open up and let in light and from which you can see the view. Small additions like USB outlets in convenient locations. And lots of little well thought out details and the features you’d expect from a very high end hotel.

A fourth change is the freedom to navigate between the three restaurants without a supplement. Whereas pre 2017 you received a credit if you dined elsewhere then the main terrace restaurant, now you can dine freely anywhere and I’ve noticed the two optional non buffet restaurants (Prime and Tapasake) are full and lively and as a consequence la terrace restaurant is less congested. Once again a better use of facilities. Good thinking. Even when the resort is full it never feels crowded.

Still as outstanding as before are the free water sports and the care which is taken teaching younger guests how to waterski.

On the negative side I think the St Geran has lost some of its original staff and the new staff are still getting up to speed and are not always up to par when questioned. We have however come across many familiar faces who are as knowledgeable and friendly as ever.

Another minor but I feel significant point is that the glass walls on the paddle tennis courts are so clean and translucent that we found dead birds lying at their bases. This could be easily remediated by placing some form of visible material which the birds could avoid.

A final note with regards to comparisons with other high end resorts on Mauritius. We have visited the Four Seasons, Prince Maurice, Touesserok, Royal Palm, le Paradis (near the Morne) and Club Med - never overnight but just for dining or visiting friends. Each of these resorts had some attractive features but none came remotely close to the St Geran - it was such a relief getting back. The Four Seasons although it is located near the isle aux cerfs (a big plus) is situated on rather murky (not blue) water (lagoon) also it is much too spread out (the manager had to show us around in a golf cart). The Club Med admittedly is in a different category but has a very inadequate beach front. The Prince Maurice is elegant but too much of the resort is on murky backwater, it seemed a bit stuffy not children friendly.

To sum it up - I think
Mauritius is an extraordinary island with wonderful people - and if you choose Mauritius as a destination there is no doubt in my experience that the St Geran is far and above the best. The 2017 refurbishing and the improvements have only served to make it even better which is no small feat. There is perhaps slightly less « old world » charm, but the renovation has made the entire resort very fresh and up to date. I would add that the clientele seems slightly younger and sportier (but this might be because I am getting older) and that there are as always many families with young children. I will gladly respond to any questions regarding my heartfelt recommendation.

We absolutely loved our 5 night stay at the Saint Geran!
It got refurbished recently and yes of course there are still some works going on and some drilling noise here and there, but we were aware of it and it didn't bother us too much as everything else was outstanding!

Our stay started a bit bumpy though...We originally have booked a beach front room which was perfectly nice but was too close to the main hotel facilities and every night there is a band playing from around 10pm till 11pm. As we were on a detox and child free holiday we were planning to go to bed rather early right after dinner. Unfortunately this wasn't possible in the room they have given us and we complained the next day. As there were no other rooms available in our category they offered us a huge suite on the quite side of the hotel!! The quite side is the one they newly developed and it feels like you almost have your own beach with just a few people around you. We LOVED it!! It even had an outside shower! I which we could have stayed longer!!!
The restaurants are all superb and the breakfast buffet one of the best you can get! The most joyful tasks of the day was going for lunch to the pool restaurant which was absolutely fabulous!! The staff was always friendly and welcoming.Whatever we have asked for, we never got the answer: "no".
My husband loved all the golf courses around the hotel which gave me some quite time reading my books at the beach ;)
I really hope we are able to come again!!!

Kind regards,
