“Great water park for the kids”
Reviewed 26 February 2012

We stayed at both Shangri-la Tanjung Aru and Shangri-la Rasa Ria and both hotels were wonderful. The best parts of Tanjung Aru's Shangri-la were its water park, its pool which was open till late and the lovely seaside walks and cafes with sweeping views of the sea. The water park was among the best we have seen at any hotel and the kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves. We had a meal by the sea in the evening with incredible views and sea breezes. The ambience was unmatched! Needless to say, the room was spotlessly clean and modern as one has come to expect of Shangri-la hotels. Looking forward to our next visit to Sabah's Shangri-la hotels!

We liked the hotel very much -good facilities, especially for families
and excellent restaurants. One gripe - when we stayed some years ago there was a free shuttle to town and to Rasa Ria and cheap ferries to the islands. Now there is no shuttle to town, the one to Rasa Ria is quite expensive and access to the island ferries is expensive and awkward. As the access to the islands was one reason for our return visit
this was a disappointment.

Room Tip: rooms in the new wing with sea view are very nice

The hotel was simply stunning, the pool was outstanding. Great food in all restaurants. The service was superb, particularly exceptional were Ronnie and Youcef at the sunset bar and Roystern in Tatu. The rooms were great and staff were always ensuring we had everything we needed. A trip to see the orangutans at the sister hotel is a must. Taxi to town is also cheap with plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from at the waterfront. Sabah is beautiful. I would certainly recommend.

We stayed 3 nights here in Feb 2012, beautiful hotel. We had a ground floor room, facing the pool with ocean views. The room was amazing, lovely & spacious. Hotel facilities were great. Sunsets were amazing. Facilities provided by the hotel for children looked great. The only problem we found was that we had to take a taxi, if we needed to go to town. The shuttle service we were told was between Tanjung Aru & Rasa Ria. Breakfast was amazing, catered for all nationalities..........so much food, unreal. Staff were very welcoming & always went out of their way to make our stay as pleasant as possible.

We stayed here for 5 nights on our honeymoon in early feb 2012. We had booked an ocean facing room in the tanjung aru wing, however when we checked in, it was in the lower floor around the back with minimal views, so we upgraded to a suite room for an extra 400 ringgt per night which was on the top floor overlooking the sunset bar and included Kinabalu club room benefits. It was a great room, very big and had an extra large balcony with sun loungers which we used everyday. We also went to the club most nights for the cocktail hour and enjoyed the complimentary wine which was lovely (we found it hard to find nice wine anywhere else on the trip!) The buffet breakfast here is very good, simply huge as is the dinner buffet which we also enjoyed one night. The sunset bar is really good too, but you must get there about an hour before the sun sets to get the good seats. Also had a facial at the day spa which was about $100 AUD, expensive for Malaysia however it was a great treatment the setting in the day spa is just stunning. We found Kota Kinabalu itself to be quite hard to explore and didn't really offer much for us. We did have one great night out at an Italian restaurant
called Grazie which was delicious and really affordable. We also went to Rasa Ria to see the Orang Utans and can highly recommend it. Overall we had a really great time at the hotel but it was a bit on the expensive side, and Kota Kinabalu didn't offer us much as a destination.

Room Tip: Tanjung Aru wing ocean facing is the way to go
