Old Penang Guesthouse

We booked after reading other views and weren't disappointed.
It's a lovely old building, has lots of character and is in an excellent location. Reception checked is in quickly, showed us around the place and then to our room.

The room was very basic but was clean and had air con. One slight downside was not having windows in the room we had. The shared shower and toilet area was kept spotless and the communal lounge area was very cosy and a good place to mingle with other guests. There were also a couple of PC's with free internet access.

Recommend booking this place in advance as it was fully booked when we were there and lots of walk-ups were being turned away.

Slept in the mixed dorm room and it was clean, comfortable and the downstairs shower room has good water pressure. Smack in the middle of Georgetown with public transport easily accessible on Lebuh Chulia. Took a stroll around in th evening and surrounding streets are beautiful and quiet. Staff are friendly as well especially Ali who was very helpful with directions and food suggestions!

Not bad at all as backpackers go, the showers on the upper floor are pretty good if a bit industrial looking. Breakfast is dull, cheap bread and jam and a bit of fruit but again, par for the course and what backpackers are used to. Noise is a problem in room 1 not just because of the reggae bar and street noise but because of the fact it’s positioned over the porch entrance, outside the main door so the 11pm quiet rules doesn’t seem to apply here. It’s not enforced but backpackers really should be self regulating in that respect anyway especially when there are gaps in the floorboards. Still, if you can’t beat ’em, get out there and join ’em! It is good value and well positioned for old Penang’s colourful night streets and well known to taxi drivers when arriving by ferry from Langkawi. There’s aircon too. Didn’t stay in the dorm but heard no complaints. There are somewhat less salubrious haunts not far from this one, but this one’s safe and has character. There’s internet in the lobby and most of Penang has wifi hotspots anyway though Malaysian bandwidth and connectivity issues still don’t seem to have been resolved. I’d stay here again if I had to.

Room Tip: Avoid room 1, dorms at the back get the quieter location

Not too near to UPR (Upper Penang Road) but still within walking distance, hence the quietness around the area of Love Lane~
Once in a while I would go back to this guest house for a night or two after bringing my friends over to Georgetown. You can opt to walk to Fort Cornwallis (well, at least I did, while strolling among the old buildings that brings nostalgia and taking photos of people working, walking...).
Walking distance to Komtar, Prangin Mall, First Avenue, and there's a famous Wantan Mee just at the corner of the street!
It's a strategic place with friendly staffs but most of the time (esp. peak season) it's fully booked. The room was air-conditioned and although there was a common bathroom, it was still clean and tidy. Breakfast was just bread, butter and jam though~ Great local breakfast can be found almost anywhere around this area so no worries of getting hungry when you're travelling in Penang! :)

Beautiful building with nice big rooms. Nice outdoor bathrooms, separate from rooms. The location was excellent putting you in the heart of old georgetown; Close to ferry terminals and the bus terminal.

Walls were a little thin, but the place was generally quiet when I was there. Depends on the other guests. The staff was helpful but I was never able to get the free wifi to work on my smartphone (oh well). The computers were almost too slow to use depending on what you were trying to do.
