“Poor animals”
Reviewed 29 December 2011

Every time i go to the Almaty zoo, i pity animals that are poor treated there. The tiger is all alone in his cage and is very thin. The water in bears' cages is dark and seems like was never changed.
People through pop corn and other food in animals, which can be very dangerous, as animals could feel bad after eating such food.

“Example of Kazakh's respect for animals”
Reviewed 11 February 2011

Though pervasive in their culture and disrespect for animal life, one still wouldn't expect a zoo to be this bad. Besides the filthy cages and the mal-nutured animals, their winter quarters are appalling. The lions are in cages no bigger than a small bedroom, as are the monkeys and every other animal. This is perfect example of how cruel humans can be - trapping and caging animals, not even to learn about them, but so kids can throw handfuls of saw dust pellets and have a chance to take a picture with them. Many of the animals at the Almaty zoo are in the learned helplessness phase. Better to not support this and if you must go to a zoo, wait until you get out of this part of the world.

“Nice day outing for kids”
Reviewed 21 July 2010

Be prepared for a very long walk, best to get your own strollers- even though I did see some for rent at the park entrance.
Make sure you take a look at the map at the entrance (walk in veering left- the map is pretty well hidden!) which gives an excellent outlay of where the animals are situated. This will help you map your time better.
We entered the park through Gorzky park (separate review for that)- there is a road that leads up to the zoo entrance- but the hotel taxi drivers refused to understand where it was- and insisted on picking us up from the Gorzky park entrance- that was a long and painful walk back - especially with tired and cranky kids!
The zoo was surprisingly well stocked with animals- lots of Zebras, lions, camels, giraffes, among other animals. We sadly missed the elephants- hence my emphasis on finding the zoo map wall at the entrance- the road picture signs were not very clear (we followed the elephant sign to reach the Tapirs!) and all signs are in Russian.
We didn't go into the snakes area but that had large crowds, and the aviary had lots of unique birds in large cages.
We did find many people feeding, taunting the animals- but unfortunately there's nothing to be done for that.
The condition of the cages was really sad , expect dirty rusted housing for the animals. But thankfully kids couldn't care less about these things and thoroughly enjoyed seeing the animals.
Lots of ponies and horses for rides (but the animals looked extremely rundown) even a llama! Plenty of food and drink being sold inside. The prices of everything get trebled once they know you are an expat- but living in Kaz you kind of get used to it. Lovely ice cream in the vans at the zoo gates.
Only one scary thing- one of the areas had a very active leopard in a cage with very low bars and no roof. It would've been pretty easy for the cat to jump out of its enclosure! Also the Rhinos enclosure has 4 ft high fence and lots of people provoking the animal. The zoo does have a pervasive animal stink overall.
But of course ,these are things I was concerned about as an adult- but the kids had a gala time .
