“Not bad, but not good either”
Reviewed 4 June 2012

Hotel Astra is in just barely in the center of Almaty, but not particularly well located to most places you would want to go as a tourist. Even though we asked for non-smoking rooms, the rooms were clearly still very very smokey. Also, the Aircon in the rooms basically did not work at all. Since the street was quite noisy we were forced to sleep with closed windows, and this made for a downright sweltering sleep experience. Lastly, the breakfast was not good at all. I would only recomend someone to stay here based on price (meaning Hotel Astra is offering a low price compared to other options, perhaps it is worth it.)

Helpful staff and free wi-fi. Airport transfers are available. Small but adequate buffet breakfast is included. The restaurant at the hotel is open for lunch and dinner also. Loved their club sandwich which included a fried egg! Across the street from a decent-sized mall and grocery store, also the train station, but too far from most points of interest in Almaty. Our room was air conditioned, but not cool enough. Carpets were dirty. Decent price for Almaty: we paid $140 per night for a family of four.

Astra seemed to be the best-reviewed hotel under $100 in Almaty, so I gave it a go. Mostly it's pretty good but there are a host of relatively minor problems that wouldn't be tolerated at a western hotel.

The staff are good and most speak English. Some look very dour but they generally provide good servuce anyway. The common areas are nice but the one lift is hard to get (I usually used the stairs). The room was smallish but quite nice with a nice big bed. The wifi, which seems to reach all areas of the hotel, was nonetheless patchy and slow. There was no fridge and the TV got no English channels (strange given they accommodate English everywhere else). The walls were a little thin - noise would intrude from the street and hallway. The bathroom was good except for a strange smell (and the fans weren't working) and the shower head was temperamental. Also, twice I got cold showers, once in the evening and again on the final morning at 7am.

The hotel's at the north end of Zheltoksan near Almaty-2 train station. It's a bit of a walk to the sights and cafes but I managed to reach just about everywhere on foot. There's a Ramstor around the corner to the right with a big supermarket in the basement. There are plenty of Kazakh cafes around. I ate jn the hotel restaurant a couple of times and it's pretty good for food and service. Costs more than local cafes ($10-12 for mains) but less than westernised restaurants in Almaty. Breakfast is a decent buffet but has a strange system where, every morning, you have to get a breakfast card from reception and hand it in at the restaurant 5 metres away. Also as it's a business hotel and breakfast doesn't start until 8, there's a mad rush from 8 until 9 and staff can't keep up with clearing dishes and restocking food.

Also, laundry was ludicrously expensive. Like, $10 for jeans and $5 for a t-shirt.

Finally, they kept insisting on cash payment, despite saying on the website and in room documentation that they take all credit cards. Strange.

For those on a budget in expensive Almaty, this would be an acceptable hotel. Internet and breakfast comes with the room rate. Hotel staff is pretty friendly and helpful and more importantly, they speak enough English to get by in Almaty.

The room itself is just adequate. Carpets were somewhat dirty and bed was too soft.

We spent three nights as a family in this hotel and had a room with three beds. Apparently, the hotel is pretty new, but you can't tell. The room smelled of smoke and the carpets were pretty dirty (which a mom notices immediately when she has kids playing on the carpets!). Unfortunately, the curtains didn't cover the windows fully, which meant that the bright sunlight shone into the room by about 5.30 a.m.--not great when you have kids who feel it's time to wake up when it's light outside! The ventilator in the bathroom didn't work and the air conditioner was constantly dripping water on the carpet.

Having said all that, the hotel shuttle service picking us up from the airport at midnight worked really well and most of the reception staff were friendly and helpful, too. The buffet was quite varied, with warm food (eggs, etc.) and toast/bread, one kind of jam, one kind of juice and some fruits, vegetables and yoghurt. The hotel restaurant/bar sold a liter-bottle of mineral water to us for almost six times the price you can get it at the local supermarket!

What was really great is that they offer free unlimited wi-fi internet, without any hidden small text or conditions and it worked great!

Good to know: there is a Ramstore supermarket right next to the hotel, which has everything you might want. And on the corner of the supermarket, in front of the railway stations are usually private taxis waiting to take you anywhere in the city, much cheaper than the official Almaty taxi company.
In summary, we did find the hotel quite overpriced for the service they offered and the type of room we stayed in, but then again, everything is overpriced in Almaty, so am not sure you could actually get a better hotel cheaper than hotel Astra.
