I'm a sushi fanatic, and I was uncertain whether Ippachizushi would live up to the high ratings. I was pleasantly surprised from the moment I walked in to the moment I finished.
Food: the sushi is refreshing, clean, and filling. The wide selection of fish is fresh and very clean throughout. I especially enjoyed the powerful pop of the tuna roe, which were big and bouncy. The rice is masterfully prepared. It was solid enough to support itself and the sushi but still so soft and fluffy that didn't distract from the flavor of the sushi. The miso soup is delicate and a good palette cleanser, offering a nice balance of herbs.
Price: the menu is well priced, with most sushi and sashimi sets ranging from ¥1000-1800 (approximately $10-18). It is all a great value for such a high quality. I opted for the most expensive item on the menu, a ¥3240 sashimi set. I had no regrets about it and the food was well worth it.
The wait: I came in alone on a Tuesday night in July around 7pm. I was able to sit down right away, and the food was prepared for me right after I ordered. The chef was actually able to beat the hostess who brought me my Miso Soup! The place was about half-full and with a seat at the bar, I got to enjoy a nice conversation in Japanese with the chef in between him preparing new orders.
Best advice: try to understand the travel tempo of the places you go to. My experience at Ippachizushi was fast and high-quality because I didn't go when the chef had 20 orders to complete at once. If you're going in a group of more than 1 or 2, I recommend stopping in early to see if a reservation is necessary. I got one of the open seat at the bar, and they still had a few open tables.
All in all, a wonderful experience, and the best way to make up for missing a connecting train. The best I'll ever have until I can afford a $500 seat at Jiro's.
