I was here today. The owner/chef prepared an excellent sashimi lunch, fresh from the sea. We also had a long conversation in Japanese about island life, the expectations of tourists, and the damage that can be done by damning reviews on sites such as Tripadvisor.

This is a lovely place and the owner is a caring and conscientious host. I wish him all the very best. Don't let the grumpy reviews get you down or put you off.

Room Tip: The rooms are cabins, they are all detached and private.

I am writing this review the night before we check out.

We arrived at 3:30 pm to check into Resort Life Kabira. Checking in doesn't really describe the process in this case. As we pulled up we could see who we assumed was the owner talking to someone outside. He saw us pull up but disappeared a few moments later. We went to the front and opened the door. No one was around. My wife who is Japanese called sumimasen. He came out, looked at us with no expression and said yes? My wife politely asked if we could check in. He said yes and immediately took us to our room. No hello, no welcome, no hand shake, no how are you, no smile, nothing. My wife signed her name, he explained how the door lock and shower temperature worked, gave us the key, and walked away without a word.

We were shocked at how impolite and abrupt he was. His attitude was inexplicable. We assumed he was the owner but couldn't be sure since he didn't introduce himself. We feel like unwanted house guests. The room however is excellent. Tatami floor, sliding doors, beautifully constructed and immaculately clean. Automated toilet, very nice bathroom. I will give the room a 10/10.

My wife had booked a breakfast for the next two mornings. She did this by email two months before. We received no reply confirming breakfast. She emailed again and asked if her email had been received. He replied and said that the email had been received.

The next morning we got up early and were ready at the scheduled time. No one was around. We called a couple of times and he came out of a room and said Yes? We asked about breakfast and he said we did not book it. My wife explained we had booked in February and confirmed it. He then asked when did you send it what date? My wife stayed very calm, but I was steaming. I did not say anything though. He again said there is no breakfast. He asked if we wanted breakfast for the next day. We asked if we could think about it and let him know a little later. He said no we had to tell him now. We said no. We went back to our room and I was furious. My Japanese was not good enough for me to properly discuss this with him.

He then came to our room a few minutes later and said with a half apology that he checked and we in fact did book breakfast. He said he might be able to make something with what he had around if we could wait. We had tours booked so we said no thank you. He turned away and left without a word. A proper host would have offered a free breakfast the next day or something to make up for it.

My wife and I have never been treated like this by anyone in Japan. We're still flabbergasted since it seems to be for no reason at all. His behavior is more like a caretaker whose job is to open the doors and fix things, and less like a host and owner.

We will send him this post in Japanese and ask for a response. The resort is affordable, well located, and the room is great. But the host is unwelcoming, unhelpful, unsmiling, and apparently can't wait for us to leave. We will be gone as soon as possible in the morning. How unfortunate.

Resort Life Kabira is just amazing, look no further! This family-run hotel consists of a few rooms with Japanese style tatami floors and futon beds (although this not a real ryokan) located moments away from Kabira bay (whose beauty is... jaw dropping, probably the most beautiful place in Ishigaki). It is a very cosy, personal place (the opposite of impersonal huge resorts that you can find in the Okinawan archipelaga).
The owner can speak only little English (his wife is fluent but she was absent most of the time we were there). However, despite some language difficulties, he was extremely helpful and accepted us with a little kitten that we had rescued from the road. He also took us by car (for free) to a place with internet connection, cooked a great breakfast, suggested the best restaurants, organised our airport transfer and was a super kind in many other ways. In addition, Resort Life Kabira is pristine clean as the owner personally takes care of cleaning, laundry, etc... Beatiful Sukuji beach (where you can sunbathe, swim, do snorkeling, rent sunloungers, eat, etc etc...) is a 20 min walk from the hotel. Prices are absolutely reasonable for all the personal care you get and the beauty of the place (around 10/15 k Yen per room with breakfast for 2).
