“Impressive and richly decorated”
Reviewed 31 January 2012

Iemitsu, grandson of Ieyasu, the man who started building the complex, is buried here, and unlike his grandfather, his tomb, located in the temple itself, is not accessible to the public, though you can view the outside walls. On a slightly smaller scale, but no less impressive, the main worship hall has extremely intricate and delicate decorations and carvings. Talks are available, but as far as we can see, are in Japanese only. Included as part of the day pass to the entire site.

“Nice maple trees, strong sun”
Reviewed 1 December 2011

There are beautiful maple trees around the compound. In the afternoon, the sun is always behind the various gates. Perhaps this is by design? Makes photography difficult.
