Beautiful Onsen

Review of Tenseien
4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 16 June 2019via mobile
We stayed here 1 night in mid May. The Onsen is the most beautiful and spacious we saw in our trip and is worth the stay in itself. The buffet style food is good but not great. The outside area complete with waterfall carp and ducks is luxurious. The main drawback is the small dark room without wi-fi. Fuji is sort of nearby but no view from here. The staff really don’t speak English well so weren’t very helpful.

This is a great hotel if you want to relax and enjoy the peaceful surrondings , hot springs , not to mention a great buffet breakfast and dinner. First, before entering the hotel lobby, you must remove your street shoes and put in a locker. It was very relaxing walking around in your socks or bare feet if you prefer, even going to dinner.
Hotel has a very nice landscaped garden with couple waterfalls and illuminated at night. The room is very clean and comfortable. You are provided with a Japanese robe you can wear to dinner or to the hot springs. The ladies can even choose different colours and pattern robes to wear each day. The hot springs are on the 7th floor for men, and 6th floor for women. It was open for most of the day except 1 hour for maintenance. So you can go as many times as you want through out the day. The hot springs was so peaceful and relaxing , and after, you work up a good appetite for the dinner buffet. To get to the hotel from Yumoto Hakone station, you can take the 'A' mini bus . It costs 100 yen. However, if you have big luggage, it might be better to just take a taxi, as they do pack the bus standing room only. The hotel is only about 5 min drive from station. Going from hotel to Yumoto station, ask the hotel of the same minibus schedule as , at certain times, the minibus only stops at this hotel. Otherwise, it does the milk run to all the other hotels along this route. Because it picks up other passengers from other hotels, sometimes the bus is full by the time it reaches this hotel. ( This hotel is closer to the station than other hotels )

Overall, this is a great hotel to experience the hot springs in Hakone area and good location to do day trips to Hakone ropeway and Lake Ashi

I arrived at the Ryokan at 17:00 and checked in. (No shoes allowed to be worn inside). Friendly reception staff that spoke English. Room was very clean and there was an overhead shower as well as a bath which was very nice. Bed was very comfortable. You are provided with a Yukata (bathrobe) to wear around the Ryokan. The food was excellent and fresh. Great buffet style and the king prawns in tempura batter was cooked in front of you. The chefs were great and helpful. The garden grounds were beautifully lit up like it was Christmas. There is a lovely waterfall too. Up on the top floor you will find the open air spa (onsen) again very clean and good facilities. I thoroughly enjoyed my very first Ryokan experience and glad I stayed here.

Room tip: The shuttle bus to Yumoto Station stops in front of the Ryokan JPY100 each way. (6mins journey)

Great grounds and waiting lounge area overlooking waterfalls and carp pond.
Check in is 3pm, not before we were told🥴
Got to the to the room after a long day and couldn’t find a shower. Ahh it’s the communal way in the hot baths or nothing.
This may be different from the expensive rooms.
Frustrated, my inhibitions too a back seat, grabbed the robe, towel and carry bag they gave me and headed to the rooftop hot baths.
When in Rome as they say....
Actually loved it.
Small white towel to hide your vital parts as you walk from pool to pool, but great shower facilities at the end.
Take a chance, you might enjoy.
The room was dimly lit. Surprisingly so.
The sound of the waterfall was great to go to sleep to

I had expected the full onsen experience from staying here overnight. Possibly just not helpful check in staff. It was only by watching some locals help themselves to the Yukata (robe) that I realised that was part of the process.

I booked a private room bath for an hour....... that was horrid - not due to the facilities - but as there was a young baby screaming next door (hopefully it was't in the hot water!). Know families have to travel - but have some consideration if your baby is that upset. Didn't bother with the main ones, and none were in natural (ie was rooftop).

Room: HUGE. The biggest I had in Japan. But bland bland bland, with poor lighting. I had a standard western suite - not sure if they had more traditional suites.

Food: Buffet dinner/buffet breakfast. Huge selections at both. Service efficient. Usual issue with luke warm scrambled eggs at breakfast. Unlimited green tea etc from machine so that was good.

Gardens: This was the best part of the hotel - small garden, but beautiful to wonder through (even in the rain).

Check out: Wish I had the person who checked me out to check me in. He was lovley and the usual Japanese helpful - down to going to the shop to get me an umbrella (choice of two) to purchase. Very very very helpful.

The wee township (short walk) looks lovely. Maybe I didn't spend enough time here - but I was glad I wasn't there for longer............

Would not recommend. Overpriced for what it was - even though included dinner and breakfast.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay at Tenseien. It did feel big for a ryokan, but all the amenities one would expect were available. The onsen facilities were excellent. There were several separate pools which made it easy to find a space for yourself. We got a Japanese style room with private onsen; highly recommend! The futons were also very comfortable. Would definitely stay here again when in Hakone!
