Great Hotel

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 15 Apr 2024
Our spacious hotel room here is about as perfect as a hotel room could possibly be. It ticks all the five star boxes. Very comfortable, very large beds. Great lighting. Excellent air conditioner. Very good bath room with plenty of space to spread your stuff. Plush bath robes. Separate shower and bath area with a great shower and a large tub. Come out and separate WC solarium that runs like their room out everywhere for your devices. Nespresso coffee maker.

Reception staff speak for the best English we encountered Japan.

Dining is good but falls a bit short. Sashimi in the Japanese restaurant is wonderful. I also had the hot pot, which was terrible. The western restaurant has in my view a very limited selection – no seafood at al. the prices in both are very high and what is really, really annoying is they add a Thermostat and I didn’t open the window. Wi-Fi turned off 15% service charge. We’ve been in Japan for 16 days and tipping in this country is culturally verboten and this is the only place we encountered this. Fit heaven sakes-quit trying to hide your high prices and just go ahead and whatever you need to the menu price. Tip: the dinner menu in the living room, serve till 930, is much better than the dining room menu. It includes both Japanese and western.

The breakfast buffet is good, but absolutely chaotic when the Hotel is busy. It can be very hard to get a table or to move around and choose your food in the crush. And for some unknown reason, they don’t have scrambled eggs on the buffet.
Date of stay: April 2024
Room Tip: Dinner in the living room is far superior to the dining room.

Hyatt Regency Hakone is definitely past its prime.
Built 20 years ago, it looks very tired and worn.
Very basic rooms, beds and bedding. Old coffee maker, rusty drains in the sinks, old discolored grout in the onsen. Breakfast was very mediocre as well.
The worse part is the service. Lack of English in the key areas, reception, restaurant, makes it very difficult to actually enjoy vacation. Difficult to call for a shuttle for a pick up from the train station, impossible to get taxi for the early morning Shinkansen, shuttle has a limited operating hours, 10 to 6:30 pm.
It is not a 5 star hotel, and definitely not a category 6 hotel for the price they command!
It needs a total makeover and extra training!

Hakone is a great escape from Tokyo. We really enjoyed our 1 night stay here. The resort is built into the side of a hill and has nice mountain views. We were upgraded to a deluxe room with my exlporist status. The room is seriously MASSIVE. Huge bathroom, couch with living area, and two terraces (one indoor and one outdoor). They give you different slippers/house shoes for each area which is a nice local touch, as well as yukatas. The breakfast buffet was $30USD/pp when added on at check in. Plenty of western and Japanese options with eggs made to order. The onsen and locker rooms were quite nice. It would have been even nicer if the onsen had a view (just of some trees/small garden), but still very relaxing. We took advantage of the free shuttle transportation to get to areas in town, as well as to the train station. For the train, they recommend you make a reservation in advance. The shuttle runs from 10:00-18:00. While this was not a traditional Onsen, we still enjoyed the mix of Japanese and western accommodations. It was definitely more reasonable then other Onsens in the area and felt like it was a very good value! If you plan to only stay at the onsen and not leave the hotel, maybe book a traditional onsen. If you also plan to explore the Hakone area, the Hyatt Regency is a great option.

Thank you for your stay and taking time to share your experience with us. I am glad to know that you had a great time and you enjoyed a spacious room. We run a complimentary shuttle to (and around) Gora station between 10:00 am and 6:30 pm. As mentioned, in Gora area there are other onsen options available as well. Once again, domo arigato gozaimas, sarahRNYC sama. We look forward to welcoming you to Hakone and Hyatt Regency in the future.

Lovely setting with large and nicely decorated rooms. Nice Onsen inside the hotel. Great air con, comfy beds, no rain shower but shower was still powerful and plenty of hot water. It was raining and cold when we arrived, so it was nice to have the large communal "living room" with a fireplace to hang and chill and have a drink. Staff at the hotel are very friendly.

I emailed the hotel in advance to ask about private guides, and they gave me the website of a local organization that has a list of guides who take you around for free (you pay for their transport and 2-Day Hakone pass). Our guide was incredible, and we thank the hotel for telling us about this service.

Also, the hotel has a free shuttle picking you up and returning you to Odawara Station. This is a great perk as the hotel is way up in the mountain and 50 minute drive from Odawara.

We did not eat at the hotel, so cannot comment on the food. We ate dinner near Gora station at a wonderful restaurant called Tamura Ginkatsutei (see separate review). The hotel shuttle to Gora Station unfortunately stops at 6:30pm. It's a very steep 30 minute walk uphill with no sidewalks (a bit dangerous). While we luckily were able to find a taxi each night, we were told that finding a taxi would be very difficult. I respectfully suggest the hotel have a shuttle (perhaps on demand by phone call) through 7:30pm to accommodate later hours.

Stay in the town down the hill. Not really worth the price in my opinion. Have to take a taxi to see anything but the hotel property. The spa was nice. The staff was amazing. But just not worth it. I really would recommend a smaller place closer to town. Other visitors there were saying the same things to the staff. Nothing to see but the onsen here. Rooms are traditional and very nice.

This was our first visit to Hakone area. We love the area, the Onsen and the Fuji mountain and the ropeway experience. The spa was great. We got a higher rate room with larger and spacious area. The pictures and descriptions were about nice views of the mountain and valley. The room we got had a view of an ugly, big power pole with huge wires coming out of it right in front of our window, and the other windows had a view of another building in front of us. We kept our curtains closed all the time. If you stay in this hotel, ask for details of what you're getting and whether it has views or not.
