Great hotel, perfect service, very good location, highly recommended!

Review of Hakone Yutowa
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 3 June 2023

Liked · Great service, did their best to help with anything I needed. The room was very comfortable and had all the equipment I needed. The location was perfect, a train and bus station 300 meter from the hotel. there was plenty of food nearby.
The room was very comfortable and clean, had all the equipment I needed. Really enjoyed the hotels facilities, kids play room, large wooden porch with hot foot bath. Breakfast and dinner were amazing, big variety of food, excellent service, even had baby food and baby chairs.

Disliked · The washing machine was pretty far from the rooms area, just one machine for a lot of rooms. It was a little difficult to go back and forth from my room to the machine, also with baby on my hands.

Date of stay: May 2023
Room Tip: Use washing machine early before breakfast. Better use cable car then bus to go up to the lake.

Friendly staff at this large sprawling hotel. Rooms are spacious and typically sparse. It has a great onsen and massage area. We had breakfast included in our stay which can only be described as disappointing. It was only served until 8.30am. The restaurant was much too small for the amount of people and food was not replenished quickly enough. On a plus note the hotel serves complementary drinks and snacks between 7/9 in the evenings and there is fresh fruit water and fruit ice-lollies available 24/7. It also has a really pretty outside area that has a fire pit and foot onsen. The hotel is only 5 minutes walk from the station which was an added bonus.

We got this very large suite that was in the CONDO complex. It is outside of the main building but there are walkways in the back that allow transverse with the key.
That said, it was incredibly comfortable. The beds were plush and comfy. Spring bath was soothing. The suite was HUGE!! There was a large sitting area as well as a patio. The entire place never felt crowded even though people were always checking in. I did not see anyone the entire time while walking around except during mealtime and the dessert hour.
We signed up for both dinner and breakfast because we weren’t too keen on looking for a restaurant. It was the best decision because the food was very fresh and varied (although focused on Japanese more). It was buffet style with an extra personalized item that you get to order. Dessert was generous and there was a small bar to mix one’s own drinks. Afterwards, there is a dessert-beer-coffee bar that was just wonderful. It was like a mixer.
The onsen was nice. We ended up doing only the private onsen and it was available both times. We also had the bath in the suite. Everything felt super clean and immaculate. The hosts and reception personnel were nice and friendly throughout. Check-in and check-out was quick and seamless.
It is about 5 minutes’ walk from the GORA train station. There are lots of bus in the main street downstairs.

Room tip: Get the condo suites with the private baths

Well located an easy walk from station and cable car There is a local restaurant a little further down rd where we enjoyed a meal .We had one of their larger rooms. It was fairly sparse but very comfortable. We had dinner in one night which was a buffet style and was v good breakfast is one of the better buffet style that we have had in smaller hotels inJapan . The hotel provides a small selection of food complimentary bw 7-9 pm which we enjoyed The public spaces especially the library is great spot to relax and catch up on some reading . Staff were very helpful and friendly . It is a slightly spread out hotel so a few stairs . Popular with young families . Hakone is beautiful

We wanted to stay in a traditional inn and go to the onsen on our way from Tokyo to Kyoto. We’re so glad we did! We were one of the few western families and it was so great seeing so many Japanese families (grandparents, babies!). The onsen was nice and the food was fine. The room was modest and the hotel was overall really quaint and charming.

We stayed here for two nights and enjoyed our stay. It was close to perfect albeit with some room for improvement (more on that later). Service was fantastic across the board and our room was very comfortable. We loved the free drink bar and the afternoon snacks (sweets, senbei, etc) were a brilliant touch. It was a great way to unwind at the end of the day. Although a bit hectic at times, breakfast was very good with a good mix of Japanese and Western dishes. For dinner, we ate out once and ate once at the hotel. As a vegetarian, options in the area are extremely limited so I was grateful for the plant-based nabe dinner that the hotel provided. The price though for dinner was quite high and if we’re being honest didn’t quite meet our expectations for the price we paid.

Because of my tattoos I was unable to use the public onsen and instead used one of the two private onsens available. The onsen was nice and cleaned regularly which was appreciated. However, we found the lack of a reservation system rather inefficient. You had to wait in the lobby until one of the private rooms became available. It was moderately busy when we were there and we ended up waiting for nearly 45 minutes. That was time we could have been spending elsewhere. With just two rooms, I think a reservation system would have been more efficient.

The only other downside (or upside depending on what you’re looking for) is that there isn’t a whole lot to do in the Gora area. Without a car, it’s a good 35-40 minute train ride back down to Hakone proper.
