Hakone hospitality

4.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 11 June 2023via mobile
Spent 2 nights in the annex. We had loads of space on two levels, with our private onsen , which was awesome. Food was a pure Japanese delight. Mattress on tatami mats completed the whole experience. Friendly and helpful staff made our decision to stay there the right choice. Very handily placed to explore the area as well. Bus connections from Odawara are frequent. Well worth a visit

Room Tip: If including Hakone on a tour of the country. Luggage forwarding is well worth thinking about,...

Good hospitality from staff and they are helpful. The package dinner and breakfast made us very full. If they can let us know the menu ahead, we could decide whether the food is fit my kid. Anyway, It is still value for money.
The Tozan bus stop is just outside the hotel and convenient to Gora and Togendai.

Having a private onsen is great, but otherwise this ryokan is disappointing. There is no public seating or waiting area, the room had no comfortable seating, the bathroom is cramped. Staff were very friendly and the food good. We’ve stayed in much nicer ryokans.

A wonderful place with private and public Onsen. The room was huge and nicely organized - unfortunately only one night stay. The Shabu-shabu dinner was excellent with a very kind service. Also the breakfast was perfect. A place to be

We looked around Hakone Ryokans with a private onsen, and Shinanoki Ichinoyu was one of the best values available. It was easily accessible from the train (we came from Nara) as the bus stops 30 seconds away from the hotel grounds. We stayed in a 2nd floor private room with an attached hot bath which had great views of the Hakone mountains. The furnishings were "basic" but Japanese standards but comfortable and clean; the meals were very large and were delicious despite not being served in-room. The bath was boiling hot and temperature can be adjusted by adding cold water from an existing valve, so it was a comfortable experience. Overall, I would say the place is not "luxury" but than again we didn't have to pay $500+ to experience it. I would rate it a fine "entry" experience into the Japanese Ryokan.

This place is well below Japanese standards The toilet stank, we complained, but it was not cleaned even after normal room cleaning. Only after the 3rd complaint. The bath/onsen in the room was awful - made of sharp rough garden paving stones, concrete and using grey plastic refuse water pipes (see photos). The shower tiles were evidently not cleaned for years (see photos). There was lots of mold on the ceiling of the bathroom (see photos). The bedrroom was quite nice, but the heating/airconditioning unit was so loud that we had to switch ii off to be able to sleep - and hence we were quite cold. The room service made the beds up like total incompetents
The only thing that was up to Japanese high standards was the service in the dining room. Excellent. Same could not be said about the reception staff. The first set dinner was very nice. But the breakfast soup had rancid raw bacon (left over from the previous dinners?, as it seems to be the standard meat element), which made it inedible. The next dinner was pretty much the same as the night before. Could get very boring.
The outside of the annex was also very overdue for painting and maintenance.
The metal doors of the rooms look like an entrance to a garage or factory
This was a real dump by any standards, and I could hardly believe this lack of cleaning and maintenance could happen in Japan.
The place seems to cater for Chinese clientèle.

Room tip: Maybe rooms are better in the main building
