Excellent Onsen Attached and Exceptional Value and Food

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 18 Nov 2018
Considering that other ryokans cost an arm and a leg, this ryokan was exceptionally good value.
Go for the Wagyu Beef menu - it's 10 courses (dishes) of things we'd never eat elsewhere. Couldn't move once we finished everything!
The onsen was fantastic - so many pools to choose from and the outdoorsey feel made it special as I laze back in the warm waters watching my breath go up in smoky silence.
It is also well connected - follow the instructions on how to get there from the station. Bus A gets you to the lower (more classy and expensive) hotel - then you get a free ride on a van which the concierge will order from the back hotel. Forget about using the other local buses such as J,K,L etc - that involves a rather longish trek - which as over 60s, we're kind of not fit enough to do.
Would have loved to stay an extra night - our room was a Western and with a little tub and western toilet too. Not smelly and certainly nice to have been provided with those comfy yukatas...
Totally worth every yen. Would we go again, definitely!

This hotel has a great outdoor onsen as there are a few soaking pools to relax for the men. Onsen and the room are clean. Room appointed was a good size. Location is up in the hills and it is quiet. However, hotel booking websites or hotel description should provide clear direction to the hotel for those who are not driving on their own. Hotel is located on a very steep hill and it is no way you can walk up the incline without breaking a sweat. Very inconvenient if you don't drive as you would have to rely on taxi or the shuttle service with limited hours. Breakfast selection is very disappointing. There are a couple of outdoor pools filled with algae outside the entrance to the onsen building which make the place kind of unpleasant.

Room tip: Ask for room with a view of the valley. And ask for direction to hotel if you are not driving on your own.

Stayed here three nights - room was dated (non-smoking twin room)... cigarette burns in both beddings. Wallpaper had seen better days. Black mould on roof around A/C vent. En-suite clean but small and creaky. Smell of smoke around the hotel. I feel like we paid too much to stay here, there are better options in the area. In hindsight I wish I had taken some photos.

It is a missed opportunity as the surroundings are beautiful. The onsen facilities were the best thing about this place. The kitchen staff at breakfast were lovely and polite, it was a Japanese-style breakfast so be aware.

Reconsider this hotel if you have accessibility issues. It is a LONG walk from the main 'centre' of Hakone. We naively thought it was a short distance by looking at the map but it is a serious uphill hike. On arrival we mistook the hotel for the adjacent spa at the foot of the hill, but they kindly asked Reception to come down and pick us up in a car and take us up with our bags.
There is a shuttle bus available but it is at the adjacent hotel so you still have to walk down/up hill to reach it (and pay for it), we only used this on our check-out as we had baggage in tow.

Room tip: Non-smoking rooms still have a slight smell of smoke. Rooms are dated and in need of serious re-fresh.

Our family enjoyed the experience at this ryokan. We have a Japanese style tatami room for family of 6.
The onsen is very clean and with good facilities.
The breakfast and dinner meal were authentic and delicious especially the dinner. I would suggest to have meal included if you do stay here as there are no restaurents nearby.
The hotel is located in the mountain, we took a bus from Hakone-Yumoto station and stop at Hakone Okada Hotel. The hotel then help us to contact Hakonenomori Okada hotel to pick us up.

We booked a stay for one night in this room and honestly really enjoyed the Onsen.

After a nice relaxing dip, we came back to our room to discover 4-5 cockroaches which I immediately took pictures of and killed. After speaking with the manager of the hotel he indicated that the resort was sold out for the night and he would not pay for us to stay at another resort- If we were to stay at another resort we would also have to pay the cancellation fee at this resort of the full price of the room which was $200. This was about a 2 hour discussion and was unresolved. He did offer us a can of Raid to spray down the room with but we did not feel comfortable with cockroaches AND poison being in our room.

The room itself was not only infested with the cockroaches, but super outdated and we found mold near the air conditioner outlets on the ceiling. The bathroom was okay, but was fitted with a poorly fitting electronic bidet which did not properly allow a man to sit in the correct position.

We were so beat after the tour in Hakone, the Onsen, and the argument with the hotel manager that we packed up our things so that the roaches would not enter our luggage (hopefully), slept for only 1-2 hours and spent the rest of the night in the lobby waiting for our taxi to the train station.

VERY BAD experience with room and staff. Pretty good Onsen though.

My partner and I only stayed in Hakone for 1 night as we had an Onsen booked in the area. We were told there was a free shuttle bus to take us from the station to the hotel when we arrived but couldn't find it so we opted for a taxi instead. The hotel is isolated and even when you take the shuttle bus you have to walk through Hotel Okada to access it. The shuttle bus is 100 yen each way and comes every 25 mins or so. The room itself was quite big and the hotel itself is a bit old, but we weren't fussed as we were only there for a night.
