The chef, Take-chan was so busy to cook for all the customers, yet he made conversation with us and recommended the local food, you probably need to speak in Japanese to get special local food and recommendation, or you will have to choose from the menu. Even from the menu, food is excellent and you cannot make any mistake, if you like Japanese food.

The entrance doesn't tell you much about the quality of the food and the decor is less than impressive, but the food (fish, scallops, shrimp, crab) in whatever form (raw, grilled, or fried) are excellent. Prices are quite reasonable. Maybe half of the clientele are tourists, but the regular clientele are coming because the food is tops in Wakkanai.

From the moment I peeked into this restaurant I had a feeling it would be a good place to dine and I wasn’t wrong. The food was plentiful and very, very fresh. I was blown away with the crab sashimi-it was my first time eating it. The service was very good and it was a bit of a laugh as this must be a family run business and you could sense the little jibes and digs that they were having at each other. None the less there was an elderly lady that was handling all the cooked seafood and an elderly gentleman who seemed to be the owner was handling the sashimi-both of these people must have decades of experience as they seemed so calm and cool amongst the slight chaos. If you are in Wakkanai go here for dinner you won’t be disappointed. Excellent….

We decided to go to this restaurant for dinner after finding that it was near to our hotel on Google Maps AND we found that it had a website that had an english viewing option AND an english menu. Upon entering the restaurant there's immediate confusion. No one greeted us and then when we tried to get the attention of the waitress, she said that we had to wait up the stairs. That was weird. In a relatively short time we were seated, but it took a long time for the waitress to, first, give us menus and then second, to take our orders. We ordered the crab and octopus shabushabu and were shocked that it didn't come with any rice, pickles, or side dishes; so, we ordered sushi, but that took so long to come that we had already finished our shabushabu. This place is not recommended. The wait staff was sort-of friendly enough, but either that place doesn't have enough employees or they're just inefficient. Also, if you don't understand Japanese, go elsewhere. The english website and menus didn't translate into staff understanding basic english.

We went to Takechan largely based on its (probably undeserved) superior rating of all sushi restaurants in Wakkanai. Live crabs in the entryway holding tanks gave the message to expect fresh seafood, but that was about as good as it got. The interior is unappealing with torn advertisements and dim spartan tables. The waiter seemed competent but he ended up bringing (and later charging for) sad scallops that we didn't order but later claimed it came with the beer. We were stuck for the cost. The premier nigiri set (¥3024) included single assorted sushi including a poor cut of tuna and salmon. The uni (urchin) was several small pieces of differing color assembled on rice wrapped with nori. Nice taste but so-so presentation, plus it got stuck to the ikura (salmon egg) piece. The fish, clam, scallop, and shrimp sushi pieces had rice with large amounts of wasabi that drowned the taste so had to be scraped off. This place is more of a bar considering the blaring tv. And gee, when we ask for tea - try not to serve it via battleaxe and frown. We were unrepentingly overcharged - and menu both outside and in restaurant did not indicated taxes to be added.
