We decided to visit Lake Akan a few days ago to enjoy a last bit of winter in Hokkaido. The timing was perfect as, on the night of arrival, we were treated to fireworks above the frozen lake.

The room on the 3rd floor faces the lake, and it was delightful as there was snow piled high up on the balcony just beyond the onsen bath, which was heated to a perfect 43 degrees. In minus 5 degree weather, the temperature was just right for a mid-night soak.

Bathroom amenities were adequate and towels were clean. The bathroom was a bit dim but one gets used to it. The shower area with wooden flooring added to the atmosphere.

Meals were great (provided one enjoys kaiseki) and the service was absolutely impeccable. Nothing was too much trouble and they were patient and very helpful, when I experienced some internet problems.

The public areas and the shop on the ground floor were delightful and very photogenic. We were sorry to leave after just 2 nights.

Room Tip: Remember to book a lake view room if at all possible

Hinanoza provides that perfect romantic holiday if you dreamed for. No kids allowed, impeccable service, outstanding food, and beautiful scenery. Your room comes equipped with its own onsen bath which you and partner can share in peace and quite. The room has a great sound system and nice tunes to choose from and all the amenities you'd expect from a 5 star hotel.

However, the hotel has failed to keep up with modern times. Our room wifi was so weak that we could not connect and the tv stations did not include satellite tv which is now standard in Japan for hotels rated 4 stars and above. This would allow their guests to enjoy free movies and have access to international news.

On the whole, we enjoyed our romantic getaway very much but a lack of wifi in the room was very disappointing.

Room Tip: Ensure your room has WIFI

Stayed there for a couple of nights with the wife just this last January. Hotel service was excellent, though it would have been better if you spoke a little basic Japanese. The complementary breakfast and dinner was beautifully done and you had a choice of either having it in the privacy of your room or the restaurant in a private room as well.

For those people who watch a lot of Chinese movies, this hotel (as well as the local pub nearby) was used as the backdrop of a very popular movie by Feng Xiao Gang, called Fei Chang Wu Rao (非常勿扰)starring Ge You and Hsu Qi. So that was a pleasant surprise, since I didn't know about it when I made the reservations. There is also skiing and snow boarding activities available about 10 minutes drive away from the hotel (hotel can send you there) as well as ice fishing at the adjacent lake.

Overall, an excellent experience!

Room Tip: Room 407 is the room used for the film

Stayed here for 2 nights in October. We were upgraded to a lakeside room and although this was on the corner of the hotel, the view over the lake was stunning. The room itself was huge and had a private onsen, a comfortable separate bedroom and a massage chair. The rest of the hotel was equally grand, decorated in traditional Japanese style and with marvelous sculptures, carvings and figurines dotted around. It has an expansive and well stocked bar, a foot spa and excellent views. Being a hot spring hotel, the baths were located on the top floors and were spacious and very quiet; I only encountered one other guest on my numerous visits. The high point for us, though, was the excellent Japanese style Kaiseki dinner we were served on each of our two nights; very delicious and varied and the presentation of the dishes was as beatiful as expected. Breakfast was equally delicious. We found all members of staff to be friendly and attentive, especially our waitress for all our meals. All in all, this hotel is expensive but well worth the price. We will definitely return on our next trip to Hokkaido

I booked the cheapest room at the hotel with town view because it is the only available room when I made the booking. Room rate is cheaper on their official website, they offer early bird discount, or 5% discount. Check in time 2 p.m., I arrived at 1 and they were able to let me check in the room earlier.

No shoes everywhere, they collect your shoes when you arrive and get it back when you leave the hotel. Staff able to communicate with basic English.

There's a souvenior shop and library at the lobby. A very fancy foot spa at the rear exit of the hotel facing the lake, selections of free canned drinks in a small fridge at the entrance of foot spa.  The bar at the lobby decor with very beautiful wood carved chairs and bar table.

The public onsen and hot stone therapy is not large but clean and barely see other visitors since every room got its own private onsen.   They provide free glass bottled milk and hot tea at the public onsen.

Even the room I booked is the cheapest of the hotel, it is spacious compare to other onsen hotel, free snacks and mini bar (coke, aquarius, tea...). There's a boss speaker and cd player, a massage chair in room.
Wifi is fast but seems it is for in room use only, it is weak in the lobby and in the restaurant.

I would say the kaiseki dinner and breakfast was average only compared to those I had in tsuruga resort couple months ago, and the compartments in the restaurant got no window, I don't really enjoy to eat in a shield compartment.

Shuttle bus to and from sapporo station is available for only ¥2500 to ¥3000, depends on season. Free shuttle to Kushiro, Obihiro, Bihoro... also available and pretty flexible if you do not drive during the trip. I booked another hotel in lake akan under tsuruga group for the next day and they helped to send my luggage there before I check in.

If I am able to reserve the lake view room next time it would probably be more impressed.
