The hostel was terrible. Everything looks so old. It has stain almost everywhere. Shared bathroom is in the separated building and is not clean at all. There's no wifi in the room. The room was poorly furnished. The only good thing about it is the female dorm room has an amazing view of the river.
I won't recommend this to a solo female traveler. Walking from the station or anywhere to the hostel during the night is terrifying for me when i was there by myself since the city doesn't have much streetlights.

There are some downsides to this hostel. First the hostel and the its are two separate buildings. The reason why it doesn't do check-ins until 4pm is because the reception is a bar/restaurant. Also the bathrooms aren't as clean as you would hope them to be. And unless you have an account with SoftBank, free wifi wil only be available from the restaurant.

That being said, the hostel is in a great location; it is within a 15 minute walk of all the major tourist attractions in the area including Matsue Castle, Matsue history Museum, several shrines and the Shimane Prefectural Art Museum. The room I had was quite quiet (being in a separate building from the restaurant and all) and I honestly had two good night sleeps. The shower can only be used from 4pm to midnight, but shampoo and bodywash is included. The owner is quite friendly, and so are his friends that were there on my second night. Spent most of the night with them and I had a great time! The restaurant might be dimly lit, but there is good jazz music playing in the background the whole time. Speaking of jazz, the owner himself is quite the musician and played us a couple songs of his own with a saxophone he borrowed from one of his friends.

This place is terrible. The carpet in the hallways and rooms looked like a river had flooded it's banks and rolled right through. Dirty and stained.
The air is stale with cigarette smoke - mostly from the dimlit bar on the main floor. The noise can be heard upstairs.
The rooms walls are stained with who knows what. The creaky, heavy metal doors of the rooms create a lot of noise - all night. The heaters in the rooms do not work. And the toilets are shared male/female.
The location is good and the owner is nice. But even that doesn't make it worthwhile.

Room tip: Don't stay here - period.

I thought this place was pretty grim, It was reasonably clean, but there were stains all over the floor and was quite run down. I have stayed in quite a few budget places in Japan and this was the worst. It seams like its a bar that happens to have some rooms out the back and
there is no one around apart from the opening times of the bar from 4pm till late. You can not leave your bag anywhere before 4pm, unless you find someone in at the pet shop type place at the back. The Wifi wasnt great and it had intermittent reception on the 3rd floor..

Young Inn is about 1km to walk from the train station, direction postoffice and bridge of the restaurant district, but it is located just 100 meters before the bridge.Rooms are basic with shared toilets.Showers are located on the ground floor.TV has only japanese channels, but thats quite normal in Japan, I don't know how many stars a hotel needs to have at least one international
station? But there is excellent wifi connection. And the biggest plus is the friendly and entertaining owner, Mr.Jazz, who used to play saxophone and loves Jazz music. He now entertains his guests from the hotel bar, and offers sometimes a complimentary Wild Turkey!!I really had a good time there in Matsue with Young Inn, stayed 2 nights, as I used the place as a base to explore nearby attractions as the silver mines of Iwami Ginzan, a world heritage site, and the Izumo Taisha shrine.
