From the start till the end, it's all a 10/10 rating for everything!
We drove into the Ryokan and was quickly served by English speaking staff. The car was valet parked promptly and we were ushered to the lobby for hot tea, towel, etc. The whole check in process was done from the comfort of our seats. We were then ushered by an older lady and English speaking staff who gave us an intro to the hotel. Attentive and polite.
At the restaurant where our awesome food-gasmic dinner was served, the friendly server spoke good English and we had a good conversation with great service. I highlight again that the food is super excellent and the whole setting is private.
The room was spacious compared to other ryokan, everything was just perfect. Even the Japanese sweets they gave was excellent.
The onset was also great! You can go in both places and it's big and comfortable too.
Breakfast was another joy! A whole spread of food with so friendly staff.
Location along the onsen area is also great. We were also given good service till the end when the waiting staff walked us over to wait for me to drive the car over to load the luggage.
Given the already high service standard in Japan, this hotel is one up the usual Japanese excellent service!

This is a wonderful warm welcoming Onsen that offers a wide array of activities, restaurants and experiences. From the minute we arrived the staff was exceptional. My friend is experienced in Onsen and lives in Tokyo but as i am coming from abroad and don't speak Japanese, I found this to be an especially welcoming hotel. We were looked after at every turn. It is a wonderful way to experience authentic Japan. Our room was especially well equipped with lovely spa toiletries and a truly amazing array of Shimane treats in bento to enjoy with the array of teas and coffee. It was spacious and well equipped. We had the Koseki the first night which was fun and very pretty. The second night we dined in the Izakaya ( as 2 women we went early) and had a lively conversation with the keeper and tasted local soba. Likewise, breakfast we had the incredibly grand "Viking" or buffet the first day and enjoyed the traditional Japanese breakfast the second day. At all meals they accommodated my dietary issues seamlessly. We thoroughly enjoyed the Onsen and by going at 6:30 - 8:00 am & pm avoided the crowds . The gardens are beautiful with koi ponds and indoor views. The shrine is a must if you are in town. I have stayed in a wide array of Onsen and this one stands out as a place you could easily use as a base for regional travel or just a relaxing holiday. We were the only foreign tourists but were always made to feel very welcome. I strongly recommend this exceptionally lovely Onsen.

We spent two nights at Minami (as it seems to be known in the town) and had a wonderful and very Japanese experience. Most of the staff don't speak English, as they don't have many Western guests. However, Lina, who did speak English, made our stay by looking after us wonderfully. She was truly lovely. The food is good as are the onsens.
Thoroughly recommend Minami (and the whole of Tamatsukuri Onsen) if you want a very Japanese experience.

If you're not Japanese and would like to experience real Japanese culture and hospitality then this is a fabulous experience. It has authentic hot springs under the Hotel which is fabulous experience. The rooms are small but comfortable and you can elect if you'd like a bed or sleep on the floor.

Room Tip: Wifi only in the Lobby

My husband and I stayed at kasuien minami for one night in September 2015. We wanted an authentic Onsen experience and we got it! For a start we were the only foreigners in the hotel, and probably the whole town! This Onsen was recommended by Japanese friends and, given that most of their website is in Japanese, it may not be well known to foreigners. I speak some Japanese so I'm not entirely sure how they would go with foreigners with no English, but it would probably be fine.
The resort has two hot spring baths - one on the top floor with a view and one on the first floor - recommend trying both. We had 3 baths - before dinner, after dinner and morning; this is normal. Once within the resort the only expected attire is robes and slippers provided. Normal clothes are also fine.
Dinner is set (part of the deal) and is traditionally Japanese - we had 9 courses. Breakfast buffet is huge!
Would recommend Japanese style room. Generally they are kept in better condition than western rooms, and tatami and futon is an integral part of the experience.
Tamatsukuri Onsen (where kasuien minami is located) is about 10 mins from the gorgeous town of matsue. Whilst it may seem completely out of the way (and it is!) it is absolutely worth the trip. You have not really experienced Japan unless you've been off the beaten track. Enjoy!
