Booked last minute through their website. The website is not so easy to navigate, but generally ok.

We stayed in a Japanese room, which was neat and tidy and had all that we needed. We would be spending our days outside anyway. All Japanese style rooms face the lake and either are on the 1st or 3rd floors. The second floor is where you enter the building and is where the lobby and restaurant is. The 3rd floor has Japanese rooms facing the lake and western rooms facing the street. Get yourself a Japanese room. The hotel staff will layout the futons whilst you are at dinner so it's no hassle for western visitors.

Food for dinner was excellent, but is Japanese only. Breakfast was ok, not great, but ok.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel. It is clean, quiet and away from the hustle and bustle of the main centre of the park.

Room Tip: Get a Japanese room which faces the lake.

Perfect location because its away from the hustle and bustle of the main area. It was quiet and homely and faces the spectacular Taishoike Pond. You can get a shot of the lake from your room in the early morning! Stunning. The bus stop is right in front of the hotel so we hardly got to lug any luggage around. The manager speaks good english and advised us on our itinerary. The room was modest and clean and we were just so in awe of the view. They have a indoor public bath but the water is just tap water and not with minerals, so we skipped that. Dinner was good with variety and we had a hearty meal.
From the hotel bus stop, you can hop on any incoming shuttle bus to the main terminal, if you buy the round trip ticket. We appreciate the quiet surroundings of this hotel when we were at the bus terminal which was so packed with people. The bus terminal can also be reached with a 30 mins hike from the hotel. I would say its value for money as it is one of the cheaper and good option relative to the other hotels in the main area.

Room Tip: Get the lake view room

Staying at Taishoike hotel is worth it for the service and the food alone! All of the staff are outstanding but the manager Masaki especially. He speaks great English and goes out of his way to help and enquires about your day. The food was really amazing - we had a gastronomic feast every night.
We stayed in both a western and Japanese style room. The Japanese style was much more comfortable and had views, but otherwise the rooms were clean and comfortable. Taishoike is a 40 minute walk or 7 minute taxi/bus ride from the main Kamikochi area but we didn't mind that. It was quiet and the location on the lake beautiful. We loved this place and couldn't recommend it enough!

Taishoike hotel was what my partner and I believed to be in the best location for the day walks around Kamikochi. It is situated at the start of the walk, providing a 360 coverage of the walk, at Taisho pond that offered beautiful views through out the whole of the day. Staff there spoke good english and offered flawless service. Everyone was so kind. The food that was included in our room was amazing - supplying a traditional Japanese course every night and either a westerner or Japanese style breakfast. The hotel was modest however did not lack in any areas. The onsen was lovely - I was personally lucky enough to get in while it was quiet and the female onsen presented a beautiful view over the pond. There was a coin laundry (only one washer/dryer) just down the hall which made it nice and easy. The bus that takes you into kamikochi does stop at the hotel however if you wanted to carry onto the bus terminal to secure return tickets. Via taxi from the terminal was only 1100 yen.

Room Tip: A view of the pond is worth the extra cash

I stayed at Taishoike hotel for 3 nights and was very happy with the experience. Initially I was worried that it was too far away from the main bridge area where there are more amenities, but then I realized it didn't matter because it was only 15 minutes walk or a bus ride. The rooms are clean, the view is gorgeous, and this hotel has a better view from their restaurant than any of the others in the area, plus the price is better. The best thing about Taishoike is their manager Masaki, who speaks great English and went well out of his way to make us comfortable. As the only English speaking tourists here, he was our ambassador for helping us catch the bus, explaining hotel etiquette, and he spent extra time researching travel for us in other Japanese cities on the next leg of our trip. The rest of his staff are all pleasant and helpful too.

Room Tip: Any room is good, they all face the view.
