Tamanoyu is a beautiful hotel location in the valley near the famous Matsumoto Castle. The staff is very nice and explains in English how to reserve breakfast, dinner and the fifth floor private spas that are outdoors on the roof. There is a public bath on the first floor and multiple private spas on the fifth floor. If you book a room on the corner you will have views of both mountain ranges. The soba noodles are made fresh twice a day. The food was excellent anf the entertainment in the evening was a folk singer.

We were greeted by a charming lady who made us very welcome and that was the tone of our stay.

Our family room on the top floor was comfortable, spacious and well appointed and we enjoyed the expansive district views from the room and the delightful wooden bath which was included.

Our meals in the restaurant were very good and the hotel very kindly provided a menu in English for our dinners. The service was friendly and efficient both in the restaurant and throughout the hotel.

Our only negative was that the hotel was a little out of town - about 15 minutes by taxi - so it was not the most convenient base for visiting Matsumoto.

The ryokan was perfect for my parents’ visit to Japan - they needed western beds and wanted a reservable open air bath. Hotel Tamanoyu had both. The hotel meals were excellent examples of Japanese cuisine and kaiseki dining. The hotel infrastructure could use some updating, but everything was clean and comfortable. My biggest critique would be that the dinner felt a little rushed (courses coming out a bit fast). Overall, for the price, it was a great opportunity for my parents to experience a Japanese ryokan.

Perfect place to stay for someone not thrilled with public bathing or couples who would like to appreciate the onsen together. The service is excellent with a welcoming beverage and a bevy of questions upon arrival from food times and choices to private bath recommendations. They have four private baths reservable for 40 minutes though in winter one has to shower first in the room as the on site shower is not available. That seemed annoying to me so I used the public, which has an indoor and outdoor pool though no cold pools. The kaiseki meals were lovely and delicous. I had pork one night and waygu beef the next. This is a great place for relaxing after the more hectic and busy Japanese cities, and I loved the nightly concerts. Our violinist and pianist concert turned into a singalong! Truly charming and a taste of Japanese community life.

Wonderful experience. From the sitting down check in with tea to the beautiful Japanese style room (although with western bed).
Incredibile staff, amazing food and onsen.
The room had all sorts of amenities including a massage chair. Loved this place!
