Its the old gheisa district but there is no comparation with Gion.
You can see the old gheisa houses, but there are only some streets and its very small.

Still, worths a visit!

Though this photo is at night the street is the same but in the daytime in good weather it is crowded. Many young girls dress as maiko or geisha and pose for photos. There are many eating establishments here though I didn't sample any. The City of Kanazawa is one of the most historical cities in Japan and this area (the center of it all)with others bring this history to be experienced. Take your camera. I spent two days and it was not nearly enough.

Would recommend going in the morning - such a peaceful and tranquil walk! Amazing olden day architecture, complemented by the cherry blossoms.

Upon our arrival in Kanazawa, we headed straight to the Higashi Chaya District. It was a Sunday, and despite periods of rain and sun, we were blessed with many women dressed for the day in kimonos. They were quite accommodating about having their photos taken. The Old Town offers superb back-drops for such images. The old streets, storefronts, a few old lanterns, really do convey the Kanazawa of yesteryear. There are numerous shops for all sorts of gifts, many coffee and sweets sellers, and some nice restaurants. Definitely worth a few hours of strolling.

This area us full of historic looking buildings even in the alleyways. There are shops too where you can but ready made miso soup in box like designs, and tea houses.

Unfortunately I went here a little late and so I wasn't able to fully explore the area, but the teahouses are worth the visit. In spring and autumn seasons, "geisha evenings" are said to hold events here.

I find this oldtown better than Takayama's because the buildings are higher and the motif contrasts the black wood of Takayama's, here it's light brown and maroon.
