We booked a traditional room with private onsen and it was perfect. We had a large room with main area, lounge/wash area with a shower which led onto the private balcony with our own private onsen. The staff were very friendly and spoke some English. We had a lovely dinner all beautifully presented and with many courses. Whilst we were at dinner our futon beds were made up. We then had a traditional breakfast the next morning. If you want to experience something traditional and a bit different then would recommend a stay here.

Went in a group of eleven. The rooms included a lounge area, bedroom with western type beds, bathroom and further room with wash basin - lots of space.
The staff were outstanding and nothing was too much trouble. You were fitted for the correct size of local dress which was worn for dinner etc. The baths were most enjoyable. The food was outstanding in quantity, quality and standard, both at dinner and breakfast. An experience not to be missed.

We stayed on a Friday night. The hotel also hosted a large tour group who were unaccustomed to Japanese custom and onsen etiquette. They were really noisy too. We were driven out of the lounge by the bad air quality (too crowded there) and the noise. Needless to say, that affected my stay.
The hotel was conveniently located 5 minutes up on the little hill above town centre. Free parking.
Room: Futons were a bit thin. So we self-served and added another layer. Our room was typical ryokan type of room. Quite old.
Food: The dinner and breakfast were served in private booth in the restaurant. Thankfully the noisy group was in the banquet room. Food was mediocre. Not top notch Japanese cuisine. Servers were friendly though and tried their best to communicate with us.
Onsen: The hotel doesn't swap the men and ladies onsens in the morning. So I soaked in the same indoor bath and 2 outdoor baths. I liked the bubbly outdoor bath in a wooden barrel. In front of the outdoor baths, there was a thin row of trees beside the footpath downhill. Which makes me wonder about privacy (You are stark naked in the onsen!)
Service: Everybody was friendly and smiley. A young man was exceptional - chatted with us and made sure our needs were met. However, there was one young lady at the reception who was really grumpy and almost refused to change my towels. I brought the towels to reception for changing coz they were dripping wet (they were thin towels and need changing after one onsen soak). The young lady mumbled something, not moving. Then changed her mind, gave me fresh towels and threw my used ones onto the floor with a bang.

A traditional ryokan, like we dream of. The location is good, the food absolutely wonderful and the service was perfect and some of the staff can speak english a little. We specially appreciated the onsen and the beautiful and big room.

Room Tip: They also have room with private onsen, if you like.
