When I was planning my trip, I wanted to stay in a ryokan with an onsen, but three months in advance almost all of them were fully booked, while the rest were over my budget.
A friend recommended this place for me since I was traveling with my father, and Western beds might be a better idea for a senior traveller (as opposed to sleeping on a futon on tatami mats). Spa Hotel Alpina was just the right size, because we didn't want to end up at super large hotels where they accommodate tours.
My father was very happy with everything at this hotel: the location, the onsen facilities, the room, the convenience, and most of all, the breakfast buffet.
I couldn't agree more! The hotel was walking distance from Takayama JR station, to restaurants we loved (Maruaki and Ajikura Tengoku), to Takayama Old Town, and to the Nohi Bus Station. The room was spacious for Japanese standards, and the rooftop onsen was a nice treat after a snowy Winter day. The breakfast buffet offered both Japanese and Western selections, and the baked goods, e.g. croissants, were surprisingly good. I would highly recommend booking with breakfast option because Takayama is pretty small and you won't find many convenient stores around.
I usually prefer staying in a ryokan, but this hotel was great value for money, so I don't have any complaints at all.More
