“Super Sad!!!!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 February 2012

This place is a bit depressing with elephants in a holding pen smaller than my apartment, and polar bears that are blatently going crazy. I hate to see this place get any money until they sort the place out and make some better habitats.

“Wonderful escape from city life.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 June 2010

A large park with well marked paths, it is easy to spend several hours walking among the trees and flowers without realizing that you are still in a large industrialized city. The hilly landscape provides a good workout for runners and walkers. In the spring there is a large space that is filled with blooming cherry trees. The park is actually part of Heiwa Park that includes a cemetery, large fishing pond, and a temple. I would highly recommend this for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of city life without actually leaving the city.

“Beautiful Gardens, Great tower view, terrible zoo”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 January 2009

The highlight of Higashiyama Koen Zoo & Botanical Gardens is DEFINITELY the gardens. These are beautiful, peaceful and I should have spent my whole day there!! Unfortunately, I went through the zoo first. While there are wide variety of animals at the zoo, the animals are in extremely small cages/areas. I went into a Rhinocerous exibit and found this huge rhino in an enclosure that it could take only a couple steps in before having to turn around and co back the other way again. The same was true for many animals... This is the zoo that the "green polar bear" was at. (Made international news when the polar bear tank started growing algae and dyed the fur of the bears.)

I would say that the botanical gardens saved the day for me with their beauty. Go enjoy the animals at the zoo, but spend your time in the gardens!

“Superb botanic gardens”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 July 2008

I've been travelling to Japan from Scotland for 10 years, and this is one of my favourite botanical gardens to visit ( I've seen about 8 including Tokyo, Osaka and Fukuoka ), only Kyoto gardens are arguably better with multiclimate glasshouse and superb collection of bonsai !

The atmosphere at Higashiyamakoen is calm and peaceful with many quiet corners, tho if you want ice cream of course there are a couple of shops for that , and stuff in the zoo part for the kids such as overhead train to view the park ...usually I am there in autumn, which means the rose garden is not at its best compared to Scotland ; mostly roses don't thrive in the humid climate of Japan anyway , but still it is a pleasure to have a lazy stroll in the dappled shade.

The zoo is fun as well - for me an attraction is the reptile house ( as we only have a couple of small snake species in my country ) with many unusual treefrogs and Japanese giant salamanders, several interesting snakes and lizards, but giant anteaters and rare clouded leopards were in the main part of the zoo also !

Allow about 3 -4 hours at least if you want to see everything...

“Nagoya Zoo”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 June 2007

its a nice zoo, fairly big, but situated in a quiet area. i don't think many foreigners go to, and its a little old. theres lots to see~koala, polar bear, penguin, etc. the best season to go to is in autumn so you can also see fall leaves~
