Spring Onion is a small family run business that delivers excellent food, in a rural setting just outside of central Hoi An. Our first day there included going fishing in a basket boat and then back for lunch to eat the fish we caught plus several other dishes from their organic vegetable garden. The next day we were met at our hotel with bikes and biked through the countryside learning about local farming, visited our guide’s home, and then on to Spring Onion where we had a cooking class. It was very interactive and fun. We then sat down to an excellent lunch. It is the only place in Vietnam where I felt totally comfortable eating salad and other raw vegetables. Our visit to Spring Onion was one of the highlights of our 2 week trip to Vietnam.

When we arrived in Hoi An we got the recommendation for the cooking class from our host and i am so glad that we did it. To sum it up it was a very nice half day that we spent on the green little island not far from the center of Hoi An with delicious dishes and very nice locals.

Why go there for cooking?
+ Tri is a very good cook with professional background. He provides a lot of good tips and is able to explain everything very well. His English is very good and in case English is not your native language he might know the right words for vegetables or other ingredients in your language as well.
+ The location is just fantastic. The house is in the middle of the vegetable village. Everything is green and the cooking takes place in the backyard - means no traffic, just some other farmers doing their jobs on the fields. Besides, it just felt a little bit like home because of all the family being around which I personally liked a lot
+ Let‘s not forget about the food :) it was delicious!!! We did some spring rolls, papaya salad, morning glory, claypot and pancakes. Don’t be scared of too much work even if it sounds like a long list. The family is around and you will have lots of time to eat and relax.

What‘s the drawback?
Good question. Usually, there is at least one thing that I mention, but in this case: Food is perfect, people are great, price is good, it was fun :)
In case you want to meet new people this might not be what you want to do though. We booked the cooking quite late and were the only people at the class.

Having our landlady arrange this cooking class for us we didn't really know what to expect and when a young guy came to meet us on push bikes we were surprised. But we had a very pleasant scenic drive through some rice fields to get to the restaurant, turns out this guy that met us (sorry, cant remember his name) is the chef and our instructor for the day. He gives us a welcome drink, then gives us our farming 'uniform', we take a walk through the back yard little farm, he picks this and that giving it to us to smell and talking about planting and farming, we had a go at watering some seedlings too. Then we got to the cooking, he showed us how to make decorative food using the knife to make different patterns. Usually with me being veggie and my partner not it can be a hassle but he made no trouble of it, separating our utensils and cooking apparatus necessarily. All in all we spent about 3 hours here and cooked and ate 4 courses! We were stuffed and so very happy when it came to an end. A big group of tourists showed up for their class and we rode back to our homestay on a slightly different but still scenic route.

We passed by Spring Onion without any expectation and we were surprised by how personalized and professional they were.
Initially we started by fishing right in front of the restaurant, asking the guide all kinds of questions about the place, fishing techniques and the life in the village. We took the fish back and they taught us how to clean it - which we ate afterwards. True freshness. Afterwards, we learned how to cook 6 dishes starting from spring rolls, pancakes salads and more. This is definitely not the tour with 10 people where you don't learn anything. This is a small family business that takes care of you all the way.

This biking and market tour and cooking class was part of our organised itinerary through Halong Tours. It turned out to be a real highlight for me with such personal attention and genuine desire to please. Tam was a delightful guide, the cooking class was well organised and fun, and the food was delicious. Sadly, my husband wasn't well and had to miss out. But I'd happily go again if we're ever back in Hoi An! Cooking teacher Tai had everyone mastering cooking with flames and flipping pancakes in the air as well as creating flowers from tomatoes and carrots. All in all - way, way more than I expected.
