Loved the inside of this church a simple but stunning alter area. There is an awesome cross sculpture outside in metal that is both modern and yet in character to the whole.

This is a great little church, simple but still really great to visit. Spend a moment inside and enjoy!

This charming church on the square is steeped in history. It is the Basilica dedicated to the Holy Sacrament. The parish dates back to the 1600s but the church was destroyed various times . The present church dates back to 1810 . Lots of statues inside. Charles Darwin is said to have mentioned the church ( ruins at the time) in his writings.

Dating from the 17th century in Portuguese style this is Uruguay's oldest church. Whitewashed and plain, but very attractive in its simplicity.

From the inside it's smaller than it looks from the outside. It's relatively simple. It's a landmark right off the small shade tree covered square, next to some fairly recently dug-up historical colonial foundations.
Anyway, it compliments and amplifies the historical elements of what is left of old Colonia. It's situated in a quiet part of town and well worth a visit as well as the surrounding neighborhood, equally quiet and quant. We enjoyed the walk, but wished it was less hot (January).

This is a lovely well kept 17th century church. Some nice religious displays inside the church. Well worth a visit.

As with most places in Colonia, it's a very pretty church and even more peaceful than the streets!
The sun was pretty much at its hottest so was a respite from the heat and a lovely place to just sit and contemplate

This would have been better if it included a guided tour. There was some old art on the walls, some of it from the 1700s, and perhaps 1600s. The alter was beautiful.

Here and all around Colonia. Do a guided tour to really get to know the history otherwise you can easily Google it.
