Owner description: Strikingly stark and simple in design, this 17th-century church is one of the oldest in Uruguay.

The oldest church in the city. It dates from 1680. Of course, this is not the original one which was small and unpretentious. The present church dates back to 1810.

Some 40 years ago it underwent a serious restoration, including a conceptual refurbishment.

A World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

Next to the Plaza Mayor in the Historic Centre.

This was right across the square from where we had lunch, so it was an easy decision to stop in. I've called it quirky because it certainly didn't have the traditional ornamentation one expects in a Catholic church. There were wooden sculptures hanging from the ceiling and a paper grotto where the fake rocks were made out of wadded up pieces of paper. This is easily worth the 10 minutes of your time that it take to venture in.

Thanks for reading. If you’ve found this helpful I’ll appreciate a thumbs up below.

The Plaza de Armas is the central area in town with some very interesting little shops and resturants as well as lots of history. Visited during an NCL walking tour and had a fantastic local lunch. Most of the history is within walking distance of the Plaza so if you have a group this is an easy meeting point.
