Medina Belisaire & Thalasso
Ranked #10 of 119 Hotels in Hammamet
Reviewed 30 May 2012

I booked this holiday as a week in the sun with good food, drink, and relaxing surroundings, and I must say we got all three...food was fine and plentiful..liked the outdoor lunch. Cannot fault the service of the waiters...especially Benfica at the quiet pool and also Nadir in the restaurant. Rooms were spacious and spotlessly clean as was the rest of the hotel. My only downside was cigarette smoking in the bars and public areas....now I have nothing against smokers in general, but I don't think it would be too much to ask if there was at least one bar in the evening were people could go who don't want to be surrounded by other peoples smoke!...So come on Belisaire.....help us out.... so when we come back next time we can have our evenings smoke free!!!!

This hotel is fairly small compared to others in the area, the reception is rather dark but cool out of the sunshine. Reception was clean and always staff at hand. The rooms are a good size we had an end room which over looked another hotel which had loud music til 2am, but this didn't spoil our hliday. The resturant was always clean and tidy and the staff Alfred, Moez and the rest of the guys were always friendly and ready to help, always trying to keep the table you preferred with drinks ready for you. The food was good, you could easily have something different every day, the food was very plentiful. There is two bars a quite one and one with the entertainment in. The quite bar was pleasant and Rambo behind the bar was lovely always remembering your drinks. The one with the entertainment in did get quite warm on an evening but only due to a fair few people in it, Farhat kept our drinks coming all night and the service he gave was brilliant.

Entertainment team what can I say!!! We were kept on our toes the whole two weeks, Anwa with the archery my partner went most days, Richardo with the shuffleboard he gaves us some laughs and taught me how to play, Jimmy showed us how to play boules and taught us alittle bit of arabic and also very good on the archery when Anwa had a day off, Sam and Richardo and them all got us all doing silly games which were hilarious at times. The kids club were looked after by Anna, Abbie and Najla and on an evening they all got together to entertain us. The Best Entertainment Team Around, not proffessional but they work really hard to make sure you have a brilliant holiday. And guys we're going back in September.

Room Tip: Pirate ship was not what the man said promised dolphins never seen even a fish.

This hotel is a lovely little place, but walk out the front gate and sadly it's surroundings let it down.

The hotel itself has very nice public areas, an attractive main restaurant and lovely outdoor dining for lunch, and two very comfortable bars. The reception and moorish cafe are welcoming, and the pool and gardens are very pretty indeed. Alongside this is very good service from the waiters and bar staff, Salem in the restaurant is a real gem, and hassan (he likes to call himself Rambo!) in the evening bar is lovely. The animation team are ridiculously cheerful and very friendly too, and not at all pushy.

Which is more than can be said, sadly, for the salesmen in the lobby who want to sell you spa treatments and trips. It gets irritating very quickly. Also the hotel want deposits for lots of things including a pool towel, which means going without some of your money until the last day (which you can change back at the airport - for a 33% commission charge!!)

The rooms are very nice with comfy beds, powerful shower and quiet air con. Our balcony was quite small but that was because we had an end room. The corridors could be noisy but you can't account for other guests.

Food is plentiful and tasty but very samey. So more than a week would be very boring.

Now, onto the hassle. From the minute you leave the hotel, either to the supposedly private beach, to the 20--minute walk to the medina, all you get is hassle to buy things. Now I'm all for a bargain but daylight robbery I draw the line to. First up watch for the man on the beach who hands you a tiny turtle and then Forces some fruit down your throat which is given to you from the end of a knife. Without asking if you want it or not it's down your neck. He did this to all seven of our party - and then tried charging £22 (45 dinar) for the privilege. I told him where to stick it.

Then there was the guy in the medina who tried to get me into his basement, and another member who wanted me to pay him £1 for taking a picture of his camel on my camera. In the end it was the principle. If they just left me alone I may have spent some money, but in the end I barely spent a millime!

The public areas of yasmin hammamet are dirty, tired and very off-putting. It seems they want all your money for no effort in return for it (see my forthcoming review on the local golf course for more on that).

My star rating is based purely on the hotel itself, not the overall holiday experience which would be 2.5 stars at the most. It's a shame, because the belisaire is a lovely hotel. Just in the wrong country.

I can summarise this hotel as a very good hotel but on three star rather than a four star category.
If you expect an elegant and sophisticated hotel then you will be dissapointed. The charm of this hotel lies on the fact that its like a "home away from home" feel. The hotel has a good structure inside but needs a good lick of paint and redecoration. The restaurant is basic. Food selection can be improved greatly but service is good. They should know more how to present and cook the food better. Really- it's not that difficult. Don't bother trying the bacon- you will know what I mean once you see it but try the grilled vegetables as it is tastey and fresh. Don't miss the Tunisian strawberries as they are very sweet. You don't have to dress up for dinner as nearly 90% of people don't bother and frankly this is just not the type of hotel. The bedroom though is very clean and quite spacious. One thing import, if you suffer from allergies particularly cigarrete smoke then please be warned its almost IMPOSSIBLE to escape it in this hotel. Animation team in this hotel is very activebut will lave you alone if you dont want to join. If you want to take a trip get the overnight Safari Adventure as it is worth the money and you will stay as well on a 5 star hotel in the sahara :-) Back to this hotel, the indoor pool(sea water) is free from 12:00 to 15:00. The beach is about 5 minutes walk from the botom of the garden (it is outside the hotel grounds) and have to walk on a cemented street for about 5 minutes. All in all, good for a low key hotel. Not bad if you do'nt have much expectations. The staff here are really hard working and very friendly- worrth mentioning in this review.

Room Tip: For yor shopping buy at JOY's which is in front of the medina. Good choices and no hassle at al...

Dear Guest,

Thank you for writing your review from your recent stay among us at Iberostar. We are very sorry to hear that we could not fulfill your expectations of a five star hotel.

We know how uncomfortable is when you are a not smoker and you have smokers around. Our hotel has separate areas for smokers. The main restaurant is a not smoking area like also the reception area. We have also “No smoker” rooms with a sign in each room. The Shows take place in the bar, where is allowed to smoke. We do our best to make our guest to respect the no smoking areas.

We would also like to thank you for sharing your observations. We will certainly take into our consideration. This gives us the opportunity to make improvements and thus offer all our guests better service, which ultimately is the goal of Iberostar.

Iberostar crew will continue working to improve our services and facilities to make our guest feel welcome. We hope you will have an opportunity to return and enjoy our Hotel again in the future.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. We are sure that future travelers will find your tips helpful

Kindest regards,
