We had previously stayed at several Aman properties, in Bali, however were not sure what to expect from Amanpuri.

We booked this resort very short notice and every day was a confirmation in itself that we had made the right choice. We were met upon arrival by Sandra, one of the assistant managers, who knew exactly who we were and which Aman properties we had previously stayed at.

The thing that makes Amanpuri so special is the service, which is exceptional in every part of the resort. Everywhere you go, you are offered cold towels and drinks. Frequently you are greeted by name, the staff in the restaurants all know which room you are in, so you don’t even have to sign for anything at the end of the meal. They will make a discreet call to housekeeping as soon as you are seated and your room will be made up as soon as you come back from breakfast or dinner. Squint a little in the sun on the beach, and your umbrella is adjusted by the friendly and efficient staff, without you even having to look up. The hotel assistant manager would come and find us every day to check on us and make sure we were enjoying our stay.

The resort grounds are absolutely beautiful, surrounded by lush vegetation and a profusion of flowers. The rooms were simple but elegant, very typical of Aman.

The food really deserves a full chapter in itself – we ate at the Thai restaurant almost every day, where the food was amazing, however the beach restaurant and Japanese restaurant were excellent also (we did not try the Italian). The beach barbecues are also very much worth it with amazing seafood.

This resort is really worth a visit and fans of Aman will not be disappointed.

Those coming to Amanpuri expect a luxurious holiday resort with top service. They won't be disappointed. I first came here in 1988 with my father, the year in opened. This was the first Aman resort. Since then the resort has expanded, but not hugely.

We booked 2 garden pavillions this time. I was a bit concerned about other reviews concerning the "dated" rooms. This wasn't so. They are certainly not decorated in a "designed" style to created that "Wow!" effect. There's a lot of timber. The ambience is warm and understated. I found this just perfect. The pavillions are large - half of it taken up by the lovely bathroom. Incidentally, the rooms fit 3 people, for there's an alcove for a third person in the bathroom area!

The garden pavillions are set just off Amanpuri's internal road. There's a slight sound of internal vehicular traffic but nothing that bothered us. There's a abundant greenery around so you're screened off enough to give you lots of privacy. The walkways are constantly being swept by staff, so it's all very immaculate.

What makes this resort special is the excellent level of service. You're greeted by the staff everywhere you go. You are looked after from the moment you exit Phuket airport until (which I found most impressive) you're taken all the way to the check-in counter for your flight. That's real service! We avoided the long queue getting into Phuket airport for our depature (due to the security screening of luggage) for this was taken care of the Amanpuri's staff. Top marks here!

At the resort, most of the restaurants knew what are room numbers were without us having to tell them. That's important because patrons don't need to sign bills/cheques after a meal! A nice touch. You can just get up and leave at your own leisure. But be prepared. Food and drinks are very expensive. Expect to pay at least an extra half of your daily room to cover your daily food and drinks. (And we didn't have wine either, which is even more expensive). The quality of the food is excellent.

We went water ski-ing and kayaked out to the pontoon often. Make sure you get to the pontoon because that's where you can feed the fish and jump in to snorkel with them. (Bread to feed the fish and mineral water is all set up at the pontoon for you!) Other options are jet ski-ing from the outlet next door but note that this is not part of the hotel. Inexpensive massages are also available on the beach from the massage ladies (again not part of the hotel).

Amanpuri is set on a steep site. So it's not so good for those who are less mobile. It's a steep climb up and down from the beach to your pavillion. Buggies are available. We almost never had to wait for a buggie to get us from the lobby to our pavillion. We always walked down though ... good exercise.

We didn't attend the free yoga classes (everyday at 8am). My wife and daughter were both very happy with the service at the spa. I was happy enough with the beach massage provided by the massage ladies at the Surin hotel next door.

I loved the library. Complimentary fruits are served there mid morning. You can also borrow DVDs there. Although there are no TVs in the room, you can ask for one (the DVD player runs off the hi fi system).

The beach was clean. There were a few bits of rubbish in the sea though, which I picked up and deposited in the bin ... good karma for me! :) Service on the deck chairs was good, but the staff could be a bit more attentive. The sea was a bit rough but the kids enjoyed boggie boarding so that was fun.

All in all, we had a wonderful time here.

First, ignore the sour spoiling reviews on here. The staff are courtesy itself and although understated and anything but flashy, the resort has the kind of polished perfection normally seen only on a filmset. And yes, I've had experience of Peninsulas, Mandarin Orientals, The Ritz, etc etc all my life so I know the grand old hotels with which I'm comparing it . To compare this to a Sheraton is just a joke, by the way, and as for efficient security staff, well I am delighted! It is a very expensive and exclusive property - privacy together with protection from outsiders is what guests pay for and expect.. Interested potential guests can see quite enough on the website!

We spent a week in spacious understated luxury. The resort is a world away from the rest of Phuket. The service is superb, discreet but anticipating your every need. The pavilions, ie rooms, were enormous, not just beautifully designed but practical too. There were buggies to take you around or to the beach if you dislike steps. There were lots of steps but this is a steep site - one reason why the beach at the bottom is so wonderfully private - so it is hardly surprising. Food was delicious but expensive, like all extras, predictably.

The beach was pristine, with not a spot of litter or seaweed to be seen. Indeed the whole resort was maintained to an amazing standard.
Space, beauty, tranquillity and superb service are clearly the Aman's idea of luxury and I, for one, would not disagree. From our arrival to our departure at the airport the experience was seamless. I will return when I can!

Hotel has been expanding during last twenty years. Around Christmas, you will have to wait to get a seat at restaurant on the beach, where, now, there are buggies can take you
Twenty years ago, owners didn't want any children or old people. I guess they are aging also.
But the best is to rent a house in the complex. from four to six rooms there are very luxurious and you will enjoy the best service. Security and reception could be nicer. but also they have to deal with rude and arrogant people. Thai people are very simple and polite if well treated.
A house with 6 rooms sells for $16 Million renal prices are on request. A nice room in hotel US.1700.00 .might be cheaper in January. You also can rent boat 5 cabins 110 ft for 16000.00 a day. multiply by 2 weeks
