Tenta Nakara is a special place. It's not the most convenient or luxurious hotel, but that's also its great charm.
It's on an island in Phang Nga bay, only accessible via a 15-minute longtail boat ride from Phuket. The hotel is a set of tents, each within a bungalow/pavilion structure, scattered up a hillside rising from the beach. The tents are relatively spacious but no frills; ours had a large bed, a desk, rods for clothing, and space for our luggage. Each tent has its own covered outdoor bathroom, with a basic shower (no hot water), toilet (bucket flush), sink. The hotel uses electricity between 6pm and 10pm, but only in the restaurant area; accordingly, guests are given kerosene lamps for their tents at nighttime, and rechargeable batteries to power small bedside fans. So the experience is rustic, but it's fitting for the remote, beautiful atmosphere of this island. The beaches are beautiful, the water is clear, and the sights of Phang Nga bay are a stone's throw away.
Also bear in mind that with remoteness comes cost; meals are pricier here than they would be on the mainland (and the hotel restaurant is pretty much the only dining option available to guests; fortunately it's tasty) and longtail trips to & from Phuket add expense. We felt all these "inconveniences"-- added cost, no electricity, basic plumbing-- were worth it, for the experience on the island and the spectacular scenery. But potential guests should realize the costs & benefits.
The service at Tenta Nakara deserves particular mention. We had a medical problem during our stay, and the hotel went above & beyond in helping us out. They sent a member of their staff to seek medical care with us in Phuket, they changed our tent (and assisted us in re-packing & moving tents) so we could access it with less difficulty, etc.
Bottom line: Great place to stay. You'll be "roughing it" a bit, which is necessary given the environment of the hotel -- but that's also what makes it unique and lovely.

The eco-friendly ressort of Tenta nakara on the sleepy island of Koh Naka feels like a haven of peace and serenity just 20' by long-tail boat off busy Phuket. TN is based around 16 or so tents built into wooden structures well separated from each other in a preserved natural environment. The tents offer quite a high level of comfort with good if hard beds, private decked terraces and attached open roof washroom (taking a shower under the moonshine is a must). The resort has its own access to the sea and includes a massage area. Enjoying the warm seawater is best at high tide. At other times, you will be able to rent 2-seat kayaks, take a walk to the fishing village on the other side of the island, the resort will arrange excursions at your request or you can go to the larger beach further on where Phuket tourists come to snap a picture of the granite rocks rising from the sea (which are your daily treat). It is in principle a no electricity in the resort and hence no hot showers but the water is normally warm enough for showers and shaving. But at 6 pm, the resort lights up for 4 hours at the sound of US West Coast Rock, Southern white blues or the occasional jazz piece, the owner Pol's obvious favourite stuff, time to enjoy very good thai food cooked with enthusiasm and proficiency by the house cook. Time also to reconnect with the world enjoying the free wi-fi and to recharge your various hi-tech gear in the plentiful sockets provided around the restaurant area. A 10 pm electricity switches off and you can either regain your tent or enjoy a last drink or do some reading at the light of the old-fashioned oil lamps that are provided at the pure sound of nature. A walk on the beach will reveal the bustling activity of crabs. Finally, this idyllic place comes at a very economic price: we paid 18.400 THB (about €95) a night for a 2-room tent for 5 at Christmas time breakfast included. TN gives an almost incomparable feeling of freedom for both couples in a romantic outing or families with small children like ours. But, the area in which TN probably stands unrivalled is the incredible warmth and availability of the staff and home dogs Dara and Chaia probably inspired by the tranquil but alert management style of Pol and his manager Sak. The image of the whole staff gathered on the beach and waving us farewell will remain engraved in our memories for ever as a symbol of Thai hospitality.

Just got back from Thailand and had two fabulous nights at this wonderful place, the staff are fantastic and really can't do enough for you. The food is really good with a wide choice, the beer is cold, the tents are sooooooo comfy and the hammock is a nice touch. This really is the place to go if you want to get away from it all lazy days by the beach or if a bit more adventurous there is Kayaking and several tours that you can go on.
As already mentioned the night time swim is a must!
I really love what Paul and the team are trying to do here with an eco friendly approach that allows you to really chill. If it helps at all I had a pick up form the airport and transfer on the longboat both ways organised through Tentra Nakara which went really smooth and saved the hassle.
Can't wait to go back next year

Room Tip: We had bungalow 8 which was awesome

We revisited the resort during September 7 - 8, 12. MD Paul and GM Payoongsak gave a very warmth welcome to four of us. After six months of our first visit, we notice that there was more space at the restaurant and more variety of good Thai dishes. You may have sayed at 4 - 5 star hotels but you will forget those hotel when you stay here at the "thousand stars resort". I really enjoyed taking a shower in an open-air shower and counting the stars in the sky above. With the nice sea breeze, I slept soooooo well all night. Relaxing on a private beach and having a Thai traditional massage was great. This reallly is a paradise to us.

We cannot wait to go back to Tenta Nakara again this coming November.
