Went for a quick 2 day getaway and wanted something easy to drive to from Bangkok, nice, quiet and maybe a little different.

Found this place and realized it's probably the only place in the region that's on its own island. It is indeed self-contained on its own island

It was a 2 hour drive from the western edge of Bangkok by taxi (took the van back and it took about a half an hour longer...still easy). As we got close, we called and they sent a boat over to pick us up at a public pier in Kanchanaburi town. The boat was waiting when we got there and with 5 minutes or so, were transported to the island.

We took the deluxe room, which is slightly larger than the basic but I believe every room is on the water. Room was nice, if a bit dated; but clean and neat with a small balcony over the water and a pretty nice view of water, mountains and greenery.

Breakfast (included in our room price) was simple...your choice of 3 or 4 set menus. My brother got the rice soup both mornings, I got the scrambled eggs with ham and sausage. Pretty standard stuff and if you hang out in Asia long enough, you accept that an American mini-hotdog is a breakfast sausage in many places. Breakfast is served water-side and if you toss toast bits into the water, the local fish go nuts. The coffee is old fashioned Thai style, meaning beans roasted to French roast, brewed dark and served with milk. It's not Starbucks but its a real cup of coffee, not the nescafe stuff many places serve.

This place must have been amazing about 10 or so years ago. Its more faded now and they need to do some maintenance on wood trim around the property, but the staff are great and the ambience very laid-back. The grounds are nice and the pool looks to be great, but I didn't try it out.

For outings and getting to town, the boat runs every hour from early to about 10pm. after that, i think it costs like 200THB.

From the resort, its a boat ride to a local market and about a 6km walk to the bridge. We spent a whole day walking through the market, along the back streets and through a temple to the riverfront and on to the bridge over the river kwai. As you get close to the bridge, the guest houses, pubs and touristy stuff begins. It was a fun day and we really appreciated we weren't staying in the middle of the tourist zone. Our feet were tired after all that so, we took a motorcycle/sidecar taxi back to our pier for like 100THB.

So, weaknesses....the place needs some investment money for an update, but there is a faded elegance about the place, which is cool in its own right. My biggest complaint is that the water pressure in our shower was low...not unacceptably low, but I like strong jets of water and while ours wasn't just a dribble, it was lackluster

We stayed here for several nights in one of their floating bungalows. Their Ferry came and picked us up and took us to the island. The ferry operates every hour from the island over to the mainland and is a lovely 10 minute trip. As has been said before, its free until 10.30pm after which they make a small charge. You just talk to a family on the port who phone him for you. The views over the river Kwai were stunning.

The accommodation was basic but clean. We opted for a fan room as the views are better. The bathroom had only cold water, but its a similar temperature to the pool water.
The on site dining room offered a good choice to suit most palates at a good price.

If you are going out in the evening, its best to arrange transport to be waiting on the shore for you as they are thin on the ground after 5pm. Reception will arrange it for you. Motorbike taxi to the main strip at Kanchanaburi is about 50 baht. A tuk tuk around 100.

We found this a really good base to explore Hellfire pass, the Railway and The bridge. But it was also lovely to come back to the peace of the island.

They have had some issues with party boats coming down river, but to be fair, the noise quiets as it floats by and is gone and in all cases while we were there it had finished by 11.30pm.

This resort was something different from anywhere we've stayed before.
We stayed for 3 nights in January 2015 and found the resort staff helpful and always on hand to help up with trips to maximise our short stay.
The ferry from the "mainland" to the resort is a little slow but we found the gentle chugging of the boat relaxing and added to charm to the quiet resort.
Top tip: as the boat sometimes needs to be called, you have to knock on a window/glass door about 100 meters from the pier. The window is on your right as you walk down the hill towards to pier. We couldn't find the window on our first attempt.
The food is great. Breakfast is simple but completely fine.
The room we stayed faced away from the mainland and was simple but clean and the river view was really nice.
The only downside was across the water from our room was a larger resort which on two nights hosted quite loud parties (1 we were told was a wedding featuring karaoke). Although the staff were apologetic and the music went on to 1am one night, if you're a light sleeper or don't have earplugs, it could keep you up. Basically, booking on the mainland side may be better.

We would stay again.

Wonderful small island resort.
We stayed in one of the basic rooms, which had everything we could need, and a wonderful veranda overlooking the river. Some noise from the odd party boat (which finished about midnight).
The island is very nicely laid out, with tranquil gardens at one end, parts are looking a bit shabby though. Good food.
The boat journey over was very reliable, lovely man. All the staff were very polite. Main tourist area a short tuktuk ride from the pier. We'd stay again.

The hotel is like a paradise from 70-s on a river island in the middle of city. I got here exactly what I needed: relaxation, smiles, nature. Very friendly and helpful stuff, nice restaurant, wonderful held garden and unforgettable view over the river to the mountains. I loved the garden, to sit there and to read or just simple to watch river and birds. Was difficult to leave. Well the hotel needs a lot of inventions to be renewed, but you definitely get what you pay. If the hotel was everything modernized the price would be not less than 120-150 USD a night.
