Chiang Saen is an interesting place where the past is maintained in the present. Many of the historical places and artefacts are still left and maintained as they are, rather been levelled for development. Trust the Thais to appreciate their past. One can either take a tuk-tuk or taxi to go to all these places, or spend a couple of hours, leisurely visiting one spot to another. Those who are interested in history and historical sites will value this place more compared to those who's main intent is shopping at huge shopping malls.

The city doesn't look of so much and maybe but are interesting if you have a little knowledge of Thai history. A walk around the temple ruin ground, knowing its the birthplace of the Thailand we know today makes it worth a visit.

Chaing Saen is great small town for a visit. It is on the Mekong River and you can watch the boats arrive from up and down the river. You can look across the river.

Old temple area but not really that old compared to others. Ok to visit as a part of a trip but really nothing special... If you don't go you are not missing out on anything...

As you enter into Chiang Saen on the left hand side next to the opium museum is Wat Phra That Pukhao, you can reach the top by driving or taking the stairway, but do not attempt if you are unfit. When you reach the top, there is a viewing platform with a nice wooden sign with a map of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar to take those photos to remind you in years to come that you were actually at the centre of the Golden Triangle. There are several souvenir stalls and toilets, and if you are feeling fully recovered there is a further stairway to take you to the temple, the views are breathtaking looking out over Myanmar (Burma) and Laos with the large stretches of water separating them
